The book offers a systematic analysis of women’s tasks, holdings, and social and economic status in the Linear B tablets dating from the 14th and 13th centuries BCE, identifying how Mycenaean women functioned in the economic institutions where they were best attested - production, property control, land tenure, and cult. Analysing all references to women in the Mycenaean documents, the book focuses on the ways in which the economic institutions of these Bronze Age palace states were gendered and effectively extends the framework for the study of women in Greek antiquity back more than 400 years.

Throughout, the book seeks to establish whether gender practices were uniform in the Mycenaean states or differed from site to site and to gauge the relationship of the roles and status of Mycenaean women to their Archaic and Classical counterparts to test if the often-proposed theories of a more egalitarian Bronze Age accurately reflect the textual evidence. The Linear B tablets offer a unique, if under-utilized, point of entry into women’s history in ancient Greece, documenting nearly 2000 women performing over fifty task assignments. From their decipherment in 1952 one major gap in the scholarly record remained: a full accounting of the women who inhabited the palace states and their tasks, ranks, and economic contributions. Women in Mycenaean Greece fills that gap recovering how class, rank, and other social markers created status hierarchies among women, how women as a group functioned relative to men, and where different localities conformed or diverged in their gender practices.

We need more studies like these: studies that use the rich Mycenaean textual evidence to contribute to broader debates in Greek history and prehistory."

Breaks new ground on women's role in ancient world

Extraordinary because this very difficult & detailed unraveling of Linear B tablets' listings of women's economic activities in Ancient Greece pushed back our knowledge of it by 400 years, and begins to answer many questions about the role of women in antiquity -- e.g. was it different in Classical Greece than this far earlier Minoan/Mycenaean period? If so, how? "Progress" or lapse in women's freedom to engage in agriculture, commerce, local trade? The first chapter clearly lays out the author's goals and questions, the sources on which she depends, the likely importance of this study for others in the future. Much is quite technical, and the type fonts for the Mycenaean texts alone explain the books high costs. I can't profess to understand all of it, but the questions are social and cultural, the evidence highly abstruse and technical epigraphy and archaeology.

A Rare Look at a Political Cult

This superbly written book provides a look at a phenomenon not widely recognized; namely, that a cult can be created around a political ideology just as easily as around a religious belief system. In the case of the little-known organization to which Ms. Stein belonged, known simply as the "O", most group members did not even know who the leader was, as he communicated solely by written instructions to his followers. This demonstrates that cult dynamics can come into play even where the leader is not a charismatic figure in the usual sense of the word. Ms. Stein's gruelling ordeal, which began as an idealistic effort based on Marxist principles and ended in exhaustion and the discovery of a shocking crime, makes for a memorable read. Inside Out is a very useful addition to cult memoir literature from a talented writer.

Gripping and thoroughly frightening

A haunting, splendidly written account of one person's plunge into a world of manipulation and brainwashing. Although the organization that Ms. Stein found herself entangled with is beyond the fringe of extreme, it leads one to realize how many so-called mainstream organizations employ some of the same tactics to subjugate their members. Her story illustrates what can happen to a person who desperately wants to belong -- at virtually any cost.

A riveting read

This is a terrific book! Once started, you'll not be able to put down this heart-rending account of ten years lost to a left-wing political cult. This beautifully written story could have happened to anyone who had a political conscience and grew up in the '60's. Although it is painful to read in parts, it is ultimately redemptive as the author finally finds her true self and her own voice.

This book has it all.

I just finished reading this great new book from publisher Nancy Sakaduski. She knows of what she speaks! It is chocked full of helpful information for beginning or experienced writers like a reference book, but is a delightful read, with lots of humor and wonderful quotes. Not only does it instruct in all the elements for writing a great short story, it also has helpful sections on editing and how to market your story. You will not find a more comprehensive book on the subject - it even has an index for quick reference. I highly recommend this book.

An Empowering Writer's Guide to the Short Story

Something that aspiring writers may not know when they think about diving into short story writing is that -- even though these stories require fewer words than, say, a novella, and can therefore seem easier for a new writer to tackle -- the truth is, they are neither easier nor easy.

Nancy Sakaduski’s “owner’s manual” for writers of the short story gently disabuses readers of the perfectly understandable idea -- that writing a short story is, relatively speaking, a piece of cake.

By covering every aspect of the diverse landscape of concerns that this shorter form presents, and offering examples and advice for each one, this very practical, everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know guidebook will not only educate you, if you are a new, or even somewhat practiced, writer, about what you’re in for when tackling the short story, it will bestow a necessary degree of respect for this likable, though anything but easy-to-write, genre.

And yet, I hasten to add, the end result of reading Sakaduski’s guidebook is not discouraging, but empowering. Primarily because she provides so much good information about writing short stories that truly succeed. This is a wonderful little book. It's beautifully designed and delightfully written - an inspiration to any writer or would-be writer. And it's full of wonderful ideas you'd never come up with yourself. I myself do not aspire to create short stories but I do write blog articles and I found heaps of highly relevant advice.
