A good no-nonsense volume

I bought this for my daughters. It is a good introductory version of the Gita. I have read quite a number of editions, and sadly do not remember which were the most interesting to me and why. This particularly volume is not as rich with respect to imagery as many of the others. I wanted to be careful about how some volumes use artistic liberties in an attempt to teach the reader. The reason is that the dialogue between Arjuna and Krishna can lead one to discover for themselves its allegorical wisdom A process of self discovery. This addition at the very least, does no harm. In a couple places it used the word "individual," in a way in which I suggested that they interpret it as 'ego' instead.

The 21st Century's Greatest Homoerotic Novel

Over the years I've bought books by the hundreds. But to tell the truth, very few have captured my imagination as much as Darwin Porter's Rhinestone Country. It's true: I bought it for the sexy cover, and there's plenty of sex here--more than the average reader can handle. But what I found was that I got caught up in the storyline. Peter Riddle and his sons, along with long-suffering Rosacoke Carson, lived an incredible story that began in the months before World War II and stretched all the way from Nashville to Hollywood in the decades that followed. Pete and Rosacoke exploded into show business like Elvis. But the tale fed to their adoring public concealed closeted, tragic, but always exciting lives, none more so than what happened to their son Buster. Even though it's not set in New York or Hollywood, Rhinestone Country is the most exciting show business novel I've ever read, and I've devoured dozens. It is also the most compelling bedtime tale I can recommend to any hot-blooded male. If you like sex, but sex with a compelling story, rush out to buy this one. It's hot, hot and hotter!

Awesome, but with a HUGE qualifier

As a writer and reader, I'm often asked for my five favorite books. This book is my number one favorite, but I can't tell people about this book without a qualifier. Ostensibly, this book is about an incestuous pedophile. The sex is described with such lurid detail that it's sickening (I'm gay, but seriously, the kids are pre-teen EEW). The thing that I loved about the book is that the narrator (basically Darwin Porter) is a cheerleader for the guy the whole way through the book. You'll read a five page sex scene between Pete and his kid that is pretty sick, and then the narrator quips "Yeah, but you can't really hate Pete for it--he's so darn cute" which is like a knife twisting in your back. It really turns America's obsession with beauty into a kind-of sick perverse ritual. I was so impressed by Darwin's bravery as seeming to cheer-on a child molester who essentially raises his own child as a sex slave that I needed to finish the book to make sure that this monster was killed. I've never had bloodlust reading a book before, and because a paper book was able to bring up such intense reactions and feelings, I think that it must be high art--because art is what rises us out of out torpor. (Entertainment makes us settle in.) Recommended, but not for the squeamish.

Genevieve Lloyd focuses especially on what is distinctive in ideas of intellectual character offered by key Enlightenment thinkers--on their attitudes to belief and scepticism; on their optimism about the future; and on the uncertainties and instabilities which nonetheless often lurk beneath their use of imagery of light. The book is organized around interconnected close readings of a range of texts: Montesquieu's Persian Letters; Voltaire's Philosophical Dictionary; Hume's essay The Sceptic; Adam Smith's treatment of sympathy and imagination in Theory of Moral Sentiments; d'Alembert's Preliminary Discourse to the Encyclopedia--together with Diderot's entry on Encyclopedia; Diderot's Rameau's Nephew; and Kant's essay Perpetual Peace. Throughout, the readings highlight ways in which Enlightenment thinkers enacted in their writing--and reflected on--the interplay of intellect, imagination, and emotion. Recurring themes include: the nature of judgement--its relations with imagination and with ideals of objectivity; issues of truth and relativism; the ethical significance of imagining one's self into the situations of others; cosmopolitanism; tolerance; and the idea of the secular.

Genevieve Lloyd, University of New South Wales

Genevieve Lloyd graduated with honours in Philosophy from the University of Sydney and holds BPhil and DPhil degrees from the University of Oxford. She was a Lecturer, and later a Senior Lecturer, in Philosophy at the Australian National University in Canberra, between 1967 and 1987, before holding the Chair of Philosophy at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, from 1987 to 2000. She is now an Emeritus Professor in Philosophy at the University of New South Wales. Her research has been mainly in history of philosophy--especially seventeenth and eighteenth century philosophy; feminist philosophy; and on the relations between philosophy and literature.

Build a hot rod

If you are planning to build a hot rod this is a good place to start. this book gives a lot of valuable information. It does leave some things out though that I think should be included.

You can do better

For the price, this is too simple and basic a book. It's limited in terms of a very few vendors and a limited number of car types primarilly pre-1940 hot rods. Sometimes it's almost like a protracted ad for "SO-CAL" products. You can get as good or better information and advice by looking through old issues of "Street Rodder" and "Hot Rod" magazines.

This is an assembly manual for a So-Cal chassis kit. I was looking fo a manual on how to design a hot rod chassis. This is definitely not that!! Very little information about details or design criteria. Unless you bought a So-Cal chassis kit, spend your money elsewhere.

As a woodworker I found the plans in this book to meek my expectations and to be challenging enough. For anyone that does woodworking and in particular turning (lath work), I would recommend this book.

Excellent book! Everything you need to build beautiful wheels of all styles AND nifty things to go with them. The only drawback is the presumption that you should own a very large lathe. Do not let this stop you, the book is full of excellent plans and much information including the proper dressing for a distaff.
