If you're an accounting major and having trouble with those other textbooks on Cost Accounting, this book is a great addition to your library. It explains the theories and works the problems in simple text. I had no problem adding this to help me with my cost accounting course.

Good Book, even after so many years

This is excellent book in the past, and if I considered it's usefulness today, it is still a very good book. You will be amazed it is still very relevant. What is missing are activity based costing, target costing and just-in-time accounting, with the last only explained in brief. It does not cover concepts of balanced scorecard or the like which is performance management and is only popular after this book is published. It is good supplement to any cost management or accounting textbooks because this provide the solutions to the questions, whereas textbooks don't. It helps those studying for financial accounting as well with the journal entry examples.

Readable blueprint for commercial real estate investing

Good motivational book, but written on "best case scenario" basis

The author does a good job explaining the CRE industry in general , however, I find his strategies to be "the best case scenario" strategies. He makes it sound way too simple, such as tying up a property under contract and then finding a national tenant. While that's certainly possible in the rare occasion, it's definitely a "better then best case scenario" and definitely not easily done

I am a novice at this point so those with some experience investing in commercial real state, may not find it that fascinating. I think it covers a lot of different strategies with a lot of breath, but quite limited in depth. Also if you're considering investing in real estate, you may want to explore other detailed texts. The author does advertise his courses and training program, which may be a turn off for some. Overall I found it useful, knowing the opportunities out there. Again this is coming from an individual with no prior knowledge or experience with commercial real state. A further draw back was a bias towards emphasising the upside of commercial real state investing, with limited coverage of risks associated with this type of investing. Hopefully if you seek to pursue commercial real state investing, then you will be wise to seek further information from more detailed texts, and ofcourse work with professionals worth their weight in gold. Bottom Line Up Front: The Word prayed = Prayer answered

With possible exception of classic "US and Brit lit" novels (and not many of those!), I've never been one to rush to get books with lots of pages and that goes for bible studies too. But like the Bible itself, Louis McCall's new book is a rich meal that can be experienced by many types of readers in many different ways. And it's all good. For those saved for many years like myself, it's a reminder "not to be lazy" ...that the Word of God is a Precious Gift ...a key to be used and a weapon to wield Every Day regardless of how busy we get. But even for the New Believer, I love that Louis immediately de-mystifies the subject of prayer so that they no longer see it as some impossible task. Instead, Chapter 1, paragraph 1 says it loud and clear: the Word of God is the Will of God ; praying in line with the Word helps them know their Heavenly Father's heart in a deeper way and partner with Him to bring Heaven on Earth for their benefit and others.

So don't think that you have to "boil the ocean" in one sitting....NO! Study and think about a Chapter a day, or a paragraph in a Chapter a day, or maybe just read one of Louis' personal stories and memorize 1-associated scripture (and if KJV isn't your style, compare with the NKJV, NIV, Message, or some other bible version). However you do it and no matter where you are in your relationship with Jesus, just start ...and get ready to get "strong in the Lord and the power of His Might! (Ephesians 6:10-13)

What's great about this book is that there are one liners ...

Format: The format of the book is decisive- everything is ordered (generally) in terms of scripture, what to draw from it and a personalization section. What's great about this book is that there are one liners that guide your thinking before you read the next passage. However, sometimes, I find it hard to keep track of one thought at a time or I find myself needing to put down the book and look up the scriptures every so often to stay in line with the thought process that could sometimes be more explicitly written out. Format 3.8/5

Content: Regarding the contents of the book, on the surface, one can easily make the general conclusion that this is a book solely on prayer or can come across like a self-help book where the author is giving personal anecdotes to assist in the general area of prayer or strengthening of prayer life. However, I would disagree with that. I think that the author makes it very clear from chapter 1 that prayer is not just knowing and seeking the will of God but also knowing who he is. I think that while the anecdotes point towards what seems to be prayer oriented, it uses scripture to reinforce who God is and what should our expectations of him be as the central focus to guide the reader before application. I would say that this is a book that a beginner would have a bit trouble with thinking through faith, favor, love and all a lot of terms as they are spoken in a Christian-nese way (in a Christian context). Will Power is knowing Gods will for you,and by praying and decreeing it....brings power! That's what this book is about. Louis skillfully crafted this book with that in mind. Praying and freeing Gods promises to us counter-attacks and sets up a firewall of protection and power from the bombardment of "lies & untruths" that try to render us ineffective and weak. Know who we are, and who's we are in the scriptures, is the theme throughout Louis's book and he makes it easy to "put up your dukes" in the Spirit and add scriptural power to your prayer! Great job Louis for helping us to not praying according to our feelings and emotions but using the sword of the Spirit skillfully and effectively! Every one needs this book in their resource arsenal!

ABOUT THIS BOOK
This book provides an intensive, complete review of all the math
essentials you need to know to master the GRE Mathematics Subject Test.
It is our intention to provide practice that is somewhat more demanding
than the test itself, so that you can be confident come Test Day. Our goal
is to help the student reach a high level of math competence. Inside this book you’ll find six full-length REA practice tests based on the format
of the most recently administered GRE test, but even more challenging.
Like the GRE test itself, each of our model tests lasts two hours and 50
minutes. Each one includes every type of question you can expect to
encounter on the actual exam. We also give you an answer key complete
with detailed explanations that spell out how the correct answers were
arrived at. By completing all six practice exams and studying the
explanations that follow, you can discover your strengths and weaknesses
and become well prepared for the actual exam.
To help you brush up on the subject matter, the book also features
281 pages of topical reviews, summarizing the essentials of the various
topics covered on the GRE Mathematics test. Again, our approach is to

ABOUT THE TEST
The GRE Mathematics Test is offered three times a year by Educational
Testing Service, under the direction of the Graduate Record
Examinations Board. Applicants for graduate school submit GRE test
results together with other undergraduate records as part of a highly
competitive admission process.
The questions on the test are composed by a committee of specialists
who are selected from various undergraduate and graduate faculties
across the U.S. This test consists of 66 multiple-choice questions. Some
questions are grouped together under a particular diagram and/or graph.
Emphasis is placed on these areas:
I. Calculus (50%)
Material learned in the usual sequence of elementary
calculus courses—differential and integral calculus of one and
of several variables—includes calculus-based applications and
connections with coordinate geometry, trigonometry, differential
equations, and other branches of mathematics.
II. Algebra (25%)
A. Elementary algebra: basic algebraic techniques
and manipulations acquired in high school and used throughout
mathematics
B. Linear algebra: matrix algebra, systems of linear
equations, vector spaces, linear transformations, characteristic
polynomials, eigenvalues and eigenvectors
C. Abstract algebra and number theory: elementary
topics from group theory; the theory of rings and modules, field
theory, and number theory
III. Additional Topics (25%)
A. Introductory real analysis: sequences and series of
numbers and functions, continuity, differentiability and intergrability,
elementary topology of R and Rn
B. Discrete mathematics: logic, set theory, combinatorics,
graph theory, and algorithms
C. Other topics: general topology, geometry, complex
variables, probability and statistics, and numerical analysis
This list is by no means all-embracing. (You may, for example,
face questions asking you to find the correct mathematical model to
represent a “real-life” situation.) The test requires more than simple
recall: It gauges both your understanding of fundamental concepts and
your ability to apply these concepts in specific situations. Because of
the wide gamut of coursework in undergraduate mathematics, not all
the material that you may have studied will be presented on the exam.
Rather, the questions are based on the courses of study most commonly
offered in an undergraduate mathematics curriculum.
SCORING YOUR PRACTICE TESTS
Each correct answer receives one “raw score” point, each incorrect answer
deducts one-quarter of a point, and any omissions are not counted.
Your scaled score is what is sent on to the colleges, and your estimatedpercentile rank shows how you stack up against other students who havetaken the exam in a recent three-year period.
While taking REA’s practice tests, it is critical to observe the same
conditions that you will find during the actual test administration:
• Work in a quiet place, free from distractions and interruptions.
• Do not use any reference materials, calculators, or slide rules
since these items cannot be used during the test.
• Work straight through each test. There are no breaks during the
actual exam.
• Time yourself accurately, if possible with a wristwatch, stopwatch
or clock alarm. Looking up to check the time will act as a
distraction (watches with alarms or flashing lights are not permitted at
the testing center).
• Since incorrect answers are each penalized one-quarter of a point,
and unanswered questions are not counted, it is not generally a good
idea to guess. However, if you are able to eliminate one or more of the
answers, guessing may be to your advantage statistically (that is, your
odds of choosing the correct answer will improve).

There are pros and cons.

The pros are
a), There are 6 tests. You need to keep in mind that there aren't many practice tests available.
b), The difficulty is high. It covers more than needed in the actual test.

The cons are
a), It is not designed for people who want to get from a 30% into a 70% level. It is for 90% students trying to get a 95% level. There are simply loads of problems that takes too much time and depth of knowledge.
b), The format doesn't resemble the actual test. It may not be too relevant if you are studying for knowledge only, but getting used to a standardized test requires much more than knowledge.

Summary:
If you want to but this book, make sure it is not because you want to cover the basics, but to increase the last 10% of your already 90% level knowledge. Take at least 6 months to prepare if you want to use this. If your goal is overall increase of knowledge, it is great.

The best of the GRE mathematics book, if you can ignore its quirks

Most of the reviews here are negative, but I actually found this to be the most useful of the GRE mathematics books. It's by no means a GREAT book--the exposition itself is barely readable and includes a number of very specific topics that are virtually guaranteed not to appear on the test. But, if you're like me, you're mainly looking for a source of practice problems, and this book has plenty. Some of them are rather difficult and specialized, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. Think of it as "mathematical strength training"--lifting heavier weights in practice will make the actual test that much more comfortable. But in all honesty, I felt like the spirit of these problems reflected well the spirit of the actual test, even if the actual content does not.

By way of comparison, the Princeton Review book is nicer looking, but its flaws are more serious in my opinion. First is the scarcity of problems--just a single practice test. Also, while many of the test problems are fine, on balance they are too computational and often don't reflect good "mathematical taste" the way the actual GRE does. I can't help but feel this reflects a lack of higher mathematical ability of the author. This suspicion is strengthened by some significant errors in the Princeton review book on standard topics (like Laurent series), and the small number of quality questions having a theoretical flavor.

If you're feeling intimidated by the GRE mathematics test and want a gentle, friendly book, then try the Princeton Review. If you're at a more advanced level and want some more serious practice, then I'd recommend this book.

Not great

Only one or two of these exams come even close to being valuable for the subject GRE. Anyone's guess how they found the people to write the rest and what the hell they were thinking. Still might be a valuable purchase, considering the dearth of prep material for this test, but the Princeton Review and online review materials come recommended way before this.

If you liked the movie, prepare for something different..

Even though I probably would have bought this book anyway (I enjoy historical fiction and Roman history), the main reason I bought this book was because I loved the movie. But I was unprepared for what was ultimately a finely crafted novel.For the most part, it takes place after the revolt: as a few of Rome's most important politicians (including Crassus and Cicero), discuss, and consider, the significance of the revolt. Also, through flashbacks, it covers part of Spartacus' life--the horrible conditions in the african mines, life as a gladiator, the revolt, and death.Basically, this book tells a better story, and tells it better, than the movie which claims to be based on it.

Like good wine: better with age.

Not including the mandatory classics like Moby Dick that we were required to read in school growing up in the 50's and 60's, I recall that Spartacus was one of the first 'adult' books I voluntarily read. I enjoyed it as a 14-year-old kid, but I'm certain I waded through the book from action scene to action scene. What motivated me to read it again nearly 40 years later, I don't know. Nonetheless, I picked it up a month ago and did it again.

The changes in my perceptions were startingly. Frankly, there are not many action scenes, and it amazed me that I was able to hang in there as a boy reading a man's book. More importantly, this is a book about people and great concepts and controversies that have been a part of mankind since the beginning.

As an adult knowing about Howard Fast's background when he wrote the book, I could read his own struggles in the 50's portrayed through the lives of the 'greatest' generation of its time, the people of the Roman Empire.

This is as stunning a book about freedom as you will ever read. Early on when a crucified gladiator tells onlookers, "I will return, and I will be millions," you can easily see the connection between what happened in this little documented yet important episode in history and what has occurred in the subsequent 2,000 years.

The story of Spartacus is not finished; mankind has miles to go before it sleeps. Still, the tale of rebellious gladiators who unite the slave population of Rome through four tumultuous years is an excellent base from which to consider other chapters in the story through 20 centuries.

An excellent book that will hook you through character and conceptual development.

Probably Fast's best book. And a great book.

Howard Fast's novelization of the slave revolt in Italy between 73-71 BC is both a work of left wing advocacy and a tremendously well done novel. I read it first when I was 14. Now, a long time later, once a year or so I re-read the copy I still have - for the enjoyment, for the character development, for the history, and for the political agenda. You could read it for any one or any combination of those features, and still get something out of this book.
For those who don't know, Howard Fast was a member of the Communist Party of the United States from the 1930s on up to the early 1950s, a committed, though thinking member. And one who was willing to go to jail ~1951 rather than testify about others in the CPUSA. (For more about this aspect of his life, buy his biography, Being Red.) So, Spartacus is a novel with an agenda. For "Rome," read western capitalism run wild. For "slaves" read the lower class, peasants, serfs or workers. And for Spartacus himself, read anyone you want to as a modern day revolutionary who is forced by history, and his own humanity, to attempt changing the world. Is this a problem? Absolutely not! When I read this book at 14, I knew that when I read something along the lines of "Rome is the whole world," that that could be taken as the Classical Mediterranean world, or as the whole capitalist world of the 20th century. If, like me, you don't worry too much about the evils of modern capitalism, you can read the book as pure historical fiction. And, like me, if you want to, you can catch Fast's criticism of capitalism without diminishing your enjoyment of the novel.
How good is Spartacus as historical fiction? I am not a classical historian, but I read a lot, including those Roman detective novels, and all five of McCullough's Roman series starting with The First Man in Rome. I would guess that Fast is doing as good a job as McCullough. Does Fast account for every last Roman legion, including the date it was raised, where it was stationed, and the historically correct name of its legate in a certain year, etc? No, but given the relatively small amount of information available about Spartacus, Fast manages to make a historically valid interpretation.
What Fast really does well is characters: Spartacus himself, introduced as a slave, and then as a gladiator, working his way towards open revolt, a human being who others might follow in a desperate bid for freedom. Crassus, the rich Roman general - rich enough to pay for his own army - who ultimately defeats Spartacus, but himself has doubts about how his own Roman morality compares with what he can understand of the goals and ethics of the Spartacus and his slave army. And Gracchus, the Roman senator who does appear to fully understand the morality superiority of Spartacus, but at the same time is so much a Roman that he must help destroy Spartacus. Throw in Cicero, and a number of other characters who may or may not be historical, including Spartacus' slave wife, and you have a wonderful cast.
Probably everyone knows that the revolt of Spartacus is finally put down, so that there are almost no survivors among the good guys in Spartacus. And yet, through one lone survivor, and through the actions of two Romans who have been changed by the events described in the novel, there is a positive twist at the end, which gives the reader hope for a better world, not just in 70 BC, but also in 2000AD.
Did I mention that Howard Fast writes well? As an example, here is one memorable exchange between Spartacus and the other escaped gladiators and some slaves who have joined them. A passage that still makes me feel good each time I think about it. Spartacus is encouraging the gladiators and the slaves to stay together and resist as an army and as a people, rather than scattering into the countryside, where they will be hunted down one-by-one:
A gladiator: "Then Rome will go to war against us."
Spartacus: "Then we will go to war against Rome!"
P.S. The movie is terrible. Although, I gather that it took a lot of courage on the part of Stanley Kubrick, Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis to make it in 1960, which wasn't very long after Fast had been sent to jail for failing to testify.
