Very interesting book

I bought this book for a child who is moving with his family to the Middle East so he might gain an understanding of that culture. This is a very interesting book with so many discoveries which I never realized originated from the Muslim Civilization. A great book for everyone to read to bring our worlds closer together!

Excellent introduction to Muslim History

After reading the publication I ordered 6 more as gifts for family friends. Young people ages 8 to 12 report having enjoyed it and several have found it useful as a reference book.

It is well presented and easy to read, with heaps of interesting illustrations.

I highly recommend it for anyone interested in this area of history.

About the Author
Deciding against law school and a career with the FBI, Stu Silverstein finally got serious about his life, found a VW bus and took a driveabout across the country in search of “real” bread. Not finding any, he returned to Maine and started to bake his own. He also builds earth ovens, writes and makes art. Later on, he started a brick oven café, and along with some friends, founded Railroad Square Cinema, one of New England’s best known art cinemas. After taking a course with the author on earth oven building, I purchased his book. The book closely follows the class format and was an excellent reference while building my oven. I could have built the oven without taking the class. It is as good a book on oven building as kiko denzer's.

About the Author

Niall Murphy has worked in the I.T. and Internet industries since 1995. His initial exposure to computers came with an Amstrad CPC 464 in the early 1980s, from which he never recovered. In college, Niall founded the UCD Internet Society which, at its height, gave Internet access to over two and a half thousand students who would not otherwise have had it. He also played way too much chess.

During the process of obtaining a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics, he held down a variety of programming, system and network administration and security-related jobs. After college, he went on to found his own consulting company, and participate in the start-up phase of a large number of companies and projects including Club Internet, Digifone On-Line, and Hutchison 3G. He used to run the root nameservers for Ireland, and is proud of having started five RIPE LIRs.

He has experience in networking of almost every kind (with the grateful exception of X.25) UNIX and Windows system administration, C systems programming, Perl, PHP, database creation and management, and Internet/IP services of all kinds, with specialities in database-backed web applications, wireless networking and next-generation networking.

As per the old adage, he thinks UNIX is the worst operating system there is, apart from all the others. He is a published poet, RFC co-author and O' Reilly co-author who does landscape photography for fun; you can see some of his work at South Bull Photography.

David Malone is a mathematician-cum-sysadmin. He is a researcher in the Hamilton Institute in Maynooth, Ireland, working on mathematical models of communications networks. Since 1994, he's also been a member of the sysadmin team of the School of Mathematics located in Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. There he helps to maintain a Unix-like service provided by FreeBSD and Linux machines. Naturally, they all speak IPv6.

I was so excited to find, this cookbook! My son and his wife just Love these hot dogs so I am sure they will get much enjoyment from this cookbook! Last summer after school got out, my husband and I were worried about our son and his reading level. It had been something that had been occupying our minds for quite some time. Out of desperation I contacted my friend who is an author (Melanie Atkinson) and asked her if she had any advice on books for boys ages 12 to 14. She gave me a list of ideas and at the top of the list was The False Prince by Jennifer Nielsen. I immediately got the book and asked my son to start reading it. To our utter shock and amazement he finished the book in 2 days. I literally wanted to cry. I had never seen him enjoy reading this much. I immediately went and got the second book The Runaway King. Once again he picked up that book and read it within a couple days. Sadly, we had to wait for another nine months before the third book of the trilogy came out. These books by Jennifer Nielsen have given me hope that my son could read and that he would enjoy it. After he finished reading the last book tonight, he came to me and said, "please tell me that this author has other books". He is actually going to start from the first book and read them again. His reading levels this last school year have increased dramatically. I truly believe that The False Prince, The Runaway King and the Shadow Throne have been the catalyst that helped him find enjoyment in reading. I highly recommend this book. I will be forever grateful to Jennifer Nielsen for writing this trilogy.

Thrilling conclusion to an excellent series

I really thought that The Runaway King was going to be as good as it got. That The Shadow Throne would wrap up the story, but that it wouldn't be as intense, fast-paced, or insightful as The Runaway King. You guys. I was wrong. So, so wrong. Because The Shadow Throne was probably my favorite book of the series, and had so much going for it. I don't know how, but Jennifer Nielsen managed to write a series that only gets better as it goes along, and grows as Jaron does.

I knew that Jaron was going to get himself into quite a bit of trouble in this book. I mean, what would a book in this trilogy be if he wasn't in some ridiculous predicament that seemed impossible to get out of? Before, there was pretending to be an orphan pretending to be a king. Then, there were pirates and thieves. And now, Jaron has to try to pull his entire country through a war where all of the odds are stacked against him. And THEN, to make matters worse, he experiences one of the greatest losses he's ever been through. He's pretty much an emotional wreck this entire book, but he still manages fight for his country and his friends and his life.

One of my favorite things about Jaron is how he always keeps everyone guessing. As readers, we all know he's got a plan stewing even when it seems like everything is hopeless. He drops hints and does things that should give away what he's going to do, but somehow Nielsen manages to add details that make it a surprise every time. I would love to spend a day in his head, or to be able to talk with him for an afternoon. That kid is crazy, and I loved every bit of it. It just amazed me how smart and cunning and resourceful Jaron is, and I loved reading about his situation and trying to pick out clues as to what his plan was.

Another thing that I really liked about this book was how much darker it seemed than The False Prince and even The Runaway King. There's so much death and violence and war is always a dark thing, and I was really impressed that Nielsen managed to write everything in a way that would still be alright for a younger audience. This book definitely felt older to me than the other two - closer to a YA book than a MG book, I think - but there's nothing too scary or gory or anything that a younger child wouldn't be able to handle.

I could really go on about how incredible this book is for a long time, but I don't want to give too much away. The best way to experience the conclusion to this series is to read it yourself, and I don't think you'll be disappointed. The ending is satisfying and fits very much with the characters and the overall tone of the series, and I'm glad things worked out the way they did. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has read the rest of the series, and to anyone who is a fan of YA/MG fantasy. Especially for younger kids who are looking to get into a really good fantasy series. 5/5!

IT'S ALWAYS QUITE bittersweet to reach the end of a series, particular one that I have enjoyed thoroughly and has tucked me into bed quite soundly in the early hours of the morning. The Shadow Throne, by Jennifer Nielson, is the final installment in The Ascendance Trilogy. And, it does NOT disappoint!

Though born into royalty, life has been anything but easy for Jaron. From outwitting Connor Bevin’s treasonous game in The False Prince, to conquering the Avenia Pirates in The Runaway King, Jaron returns in The Shadow Throne as the Ascendance King of Carthya.

But…War is here.

And, it’s here with a vengeance! Three countries launch simultaneous attacks on Carthya with King Vargan of Avenia stopping at nothing until Jaron meets his demise, including the kidnapping of Imogen. Conflicted, Jaron must choose between his kingdom or his heart.

Everything that could go wrong…does. Imogen is imprisoned, the Princess Amarinda is missing, Roden and Tobias are flung far and wide across Carthya. In a desperate attempt to save his country and the people he loves, Jaron embarks on a daring, if reckless, attempt to change the course of the war. Despite the terrible disadvantages that Jaron constantly faces, there is always an undercurrent of something more than Jaron lets readers on. And as the outcome of the war changes its trajectory many-folds, readers will be left guessing until the very end who will be victorious.

By far, this Jaron has been quite enjoyable to read. The lost of those dear to him, the positive people he surrounds himself with, and the responsibilities that he shoulders as king, have groomed him into a remarkable young man full of compassion and some humility. Though, readers will still enjoy his lightening-quick wit. I found myself passing the time in my son’s martial arts class, giggling like an idiot, to Jaron’s remarks punctuated precisely at the right moment in the storyline to deliver the perfect punch line.

It is a difficult thing – to write an ending that appeals to everyone. The last few chapters felt rushed, with a highly unexpected twist that came out of nowhere with a particular foe. Regardless, Ms. Nielson writes with such fervor and excitement that she has a fan in me. Until your next book Ms. Nielson…
