Not as good as any of the previous books- a wild goose chase, for characters and readers.

I enjoyed this book the least of any within the two series. (I've loved both series, never giving a book below 4 stars) As always the strength of the story is the interplay and dialogue between the main character and his companions and that remains a strong point. The further the Shi'ell story goes along the more I realize that some of the magic of the previous series is missing in this series. Part of that magic in the first series was the combination of : The greater challenge+ spitting in the eye of fate+ the love story + the value of maintaining care and humanity despite the awful circumstances.

Spoiler- Sirina lacks everything mentioned above, is the antithesis of everything the story(s) valued before. I ended up wanting her plans and the people around her to fail, I'm embarrassed to admit, I thought for a moment, ...wouldn't it be fitting if Sirina and Kamryn encountered a surviving assassin and both died on their return trip.

But Sirina aside, the biggest issue is time wasted by the character, and readers. Because basic, well known information is denied (by Sirina) Argovayne and readers slog through a story that ultimately ends being about a worthless chase to nowhere, leading to nothing.

At the end of the chase to nowhere Agrovane learns:

1. He is not worth/worthy of knowing the "real" plans. Tools don't need know the details.
2. He is, and has always been disposable, even to his family, and is unimportant to the larger battle being waged. He's a fire and forget weapon.
3. Is hated by his sister, she has always seen him pathetic. (Perhaps a view shared by his mother, who keeps Sirina as her confidant)
4. He is not person to be loved by anyone other than his friends.

All in all a pretty unfulfilling read.

I was disappointed in Argo as a main character

I've been a fan of this author since the day Gawain returned to find his homeland destroyed and began his mission of vengeance.

When I first began the Shi'ell series, I was disappointed in Argo as a main character. I'd hoped to be able to pick out pieces of his mother and father in his character, but his coldness and distant demeanor made it hard for me to warm up to him. Luckily, this resolved itself quickly. The banter between the companions truly made the story, and soon I was captured by his storyline and cheering him on as he developed both as a hero and as a person.

I've always disliked the long portions of the storyline that involve the hero traveling alone. While I appreciate glimpses into his thoughts, the extremely long internal monologs tend to make my attention wander once I've grasped the explanation/resolution of whatever conflict the character was mulling over. GJ Kelly is one of the few authors that make it worth it to hang in there. His characters are just so immensely likeable, you can't help but keep going just to find out what happens to them.

That being said.....Sirina. I don't think anyone loves her at this point. Other reviewers have said it better than I ever could, but I do want to add this:

The importance of the Shi'ell has been an ongoing plot line since the previous series. His myth and legend discussed in detail since long before his birth. As the readers, we picked up this series in order to see the fruition of all this planning....only to be (seemingly) betrayed. Is the shi'ell merely a strawman for the enemy to target while the real work is done by others?

I refuse to believe that everything up to this point has been for nothing. Unless GJ Kelly has surrendered his writing to a ghost author, there must be an explanation. Plots within plots. Because if Sirina is the new kindred heroine, my new hope will be that the series conclusion ends with a ranger's arrow finding it's way into her cold, compassionless heart.

I have faith in Mr. Kelly. I just hope that we don't have to wait too long for this explanation. To have to sit through several books' worth of Argo thinking he's useless after 4 books of development would be too much for me.

Ah, (character who shall remain anonymous for the sake of spoilers), why do you vex me so?

The book overall was good and I would recommend reading it and continuing the series, but there were a few issues I had. Should you like to see why I didn't give 5 stars (3.5, is what I gave), continue reading at your own risk.

*Spoilers*
While I gave this book 4 stars, my real belief is that it is closer to 3.5. I love this author--he is absolutely one of my favorites, and will likely continue to be. However, I was fairly disappointed with the turn of events in this story. Argo's entire journey (literally the entire book) and his existence in general, was rendered useless and deemed a disappointment by a cold, unforgiving Sirina. Her character became so unlikable to me that I almost want her to fail (well, I certainly want her to fail, but not the kindred entirely). I'm fond of Argo, and have rooted him on from the beginning. The ending, I suspect (read: hope) has some specific purpose other than to shame Argo and make him look like an utter waste of Human, Elf, and White Haired flesh. That said, the book did further his character significantly, the newer characters (Hagai and Kaera) were excellent, and the world building was just as fantastic as previous books. For this reason I rounded up rather than down when rating the book. I haven't yet come across a major detail that had no further impact on the overall story, so it will take more than an ending of disappointment to dissuade me from continuing the series. If anything, I want to read more to see Argo redeem himself and knock Sirina on her pompous a**! I'm hoping, Mr. Kelly, that my wishes will come true, if not exactly as described :)

Pretty good resource

I liked reading this book because it described how buddies live in the wild. I also read another similar book by a different author and it was good to compare them to see where they agreed and disagreed. Both books were helpful and inexpensive on my Kindle

Informative for new parakeet owner

Just purchased 2 baby girls last week for my little girls birthday. They are very sweet birds and already allow us to touch them and one put her foot on my finger and I want to make sure they are happy and healthy. I had no idea a mirror could be a bad idea when bonding with them. My girls are obsessed with their reflection so it adds up. I also didn't know they needed grit and none of the pet stores or websites I've visited mentioned it was needed. Glad I read the book.

I love this book it informed me SO much it taught me how to clip my buddies wings breed take and train and so much more I highly recommend this book I have to little cuties a girl Sukiee and a boy Cookie and I learned so much today and my sukiee is a tough one so I'm gonna do what the book said for taming the birds THANK YOU SO MUCH AMAZON

more focused on large aircrafts but great basic text for achieving license

One of the listed textbook required for BCIT's AME E/B2 course.
Very basic, great introduction with minimum sample pictures (black/white) with illustrations. But less detailed explanation if you are more focused on the bench testing results for each component. So it might suite for AME Category-M rather than Category-E. And most navigation systems discussed in this book are based on large commercial aircrafts.

Classic Corben back in print from iBooks as of June 2003

Sure, Harlan Ellison wrote the classic stories, but my first exposure to the adventures of Vic and Blood came through Richard Corben's comic adaptations. I read Ellison's stories later and was happy to find that the comics were very faithful adaptations. It's good to see, therefore, that the iBooks paperback edition of VIC & BLOOD - THE CONTINUING ADVENTURES OF A BOY & HIS DOG gives you the chance to compare the comics with the original stories, all in one book! You get both comic and text versions of "Eggsucker", "A Boy and His Dog", and "Run Spot Run", and the texts are accompanied by a handfull of highly detailed Corben illustrations, along with sidebar quotes from Blood (The Wit and Wisdom of Blood). It's a very attractive package, led off with a humorous introduction by Ellison that touches on his supposed upcoming novel BLOOD'S A ROVER (will we ever see it? I can only hope). While this type of literature might not be everyone's cup of tea, I give this book 5 stars for presentation, as well as its appeal to fans of Ellison and Corben - they will love it.

I love Corben's work and Ellison's as well. I wish Corben collaborated with more writers of Ellison's caliber actually. I would give the art 7/10 on the scale of What Corben can do and 10/10 for story. Keep in mind this is the story that spawned a genre of imitators for decades. I only wish there were more chapters, it has all the makings of an epic. There was a movie made from the same story it starred a teenage Don Johnson. It did not follow the original as closely as this.

I debated wether I should give this graphic novel 3 stars or 4. I have decided to give it a 4 star rating.
The story was'nt that spectacular, and neither was the art (which is a letdown from this Corben fan). However, the story and art were still in the good range. It was a close call, but I will give this graphic novel a shaky 4 star rating. It was'nt bad.

A must have for any rpg fans library.

Love this book, but my 7 year old is loving it way more, I think. He is doing his research all ready. He wants his Dragonborn Ranger to hopefully find a baby Phase Kitten/Displacer Beast to raise as his animal companion. The Baby Bestiary is a must have for your little adventurers and us adults alike. It is loaded with everything that's needed to know about the little guys and suggested ways of rearing them up. Wonderful read and amazing art. It's a great fun read and perfect for your coffee table as well.

Our 4 year old loves this. Lots of great monsters, and they're babies too! The illustrations range from good to excellent with lots of familiar and some less familiar monsters (Owlbear, that's you!) Just over half the book is text which is written in character with tongue firmly in cheek. Anyone who has watched (too much) My Little Pony will recognize most of these, and any dice-rollers will recognize all of them. A very impressive product from a small company and a big-hearted Kickstarter success.

Get Busy Reading

I downloaded this book to my tablet and started reading and reading and reading. A day later I was disappointed that I had reached the end while I still wanted to read more and more. The dishes were unwashed, the bed was unmade, and I was still in my pajamas. But I had read every page.

If I were not running Kindle on my tablet I would have called the book a page turner. Was it a page-scroller? A screen-changer? A Nexus-next pager? Whatever it was, I enjoyed every snarky comment on every page.

About the plot. Roy is an insurance fraud chaser videographer on a mission to find a missing person who is supposed to be dead. He uses lots of technology but, unlike Melville writing all about whale flensing in excruciating detail in Moby Dick, Rehder didn't bog me down in learning all about cameras and files and other tech stuff. There was enough to be plausible. There's also enough detail about the locale to make the Austin area setting seem real, but again, not so much that I needed to read with a GPS to follow the action. Maybe the next book will take place east of Austin out in the Blacklands. You should read this book. You'll like it as much as I did.

The mystery was clever. The characters and the situations were realistic. Sometimes I wanted to be his partner Mia and be that smart and ride along.

I hope there are more books to come in this series. I have read all of Ben Rehder's books. This one is a change from riding in the pickup with the game warden John Martin. I do wish I knew how to pronounce Rehder's name. Is it Reeder which would make me a member of Rehder's Readers? Is it Ray-der which would make me a member of Rehder's Raiders? Or Rehh-duh to rhyme with I read a good book? Whatever he calls himself I hope he's working on the next one.

a Texas romp!

I wanted a light, fun read after slogging through a previous book that took a lot of time and thought to get through. This fit the bill. The story moves along quickly, there are enough twists and turns to keep any reader satisfied, and the main character is, what we call in the South, a hoot. He is witty and quick with his comebacks. His comely partner matches him barb for barb. Set in the Texas Hill Country, the book satisfies another joy of mine: reading about "home." I'm not from Austin (I'm from Ft. Worth--where the west begins--Cowtown, USA) but I've spent enough time in the Texas capital to recognize the landmarks in this fun, fun novel. If crime novels are your thing, and your not ready to take on Crime and Punishment, then pick up Get Busy Dying. You'll be glad!

This was an interesting mystery, Told in first person,very conversational. The plot revolved around a man dying in a car crash after he had taken a three million dollar insurance policy on himself. The insurance company wanted to know if fraud was evident. Through many twists and turns , it was a good read.
