Exotica by David Toop
David Toop is arguably the most intelligent music critic writing today, his range of interests prospecting across an avant garde canvas coloured by the 20th century's foremost writers, thinkers and musicians.
Although Toop's subject is predominantly that of fabricated soundscapes in a real world, a music which has come to be categorised as exotica, his roots are literary and extend to novelistic cosmographers like Herman Melville, Joseph Conrad and William Burroughs. Toop is erudite, but refreshingly unacademic in the way his texts are interspersed with autobiography, anecdote, interviews and fiction. Bringing imaginative criticism to bear on a range of subjects from the beginnings of ethnic music to Josephine Baker and Yma Sumac, Les Baxter and Martin Denny, Toop succeeds in aligning the concept of the exotic with world music. In a century in which we have grown to be increasingly interiorised, television often providing our point of contact with the external world, so music has come to assume the role of transporting geography into our rooms. In this respect Les Baxter's floridly contrived soundscapes prove central to Toop's thesis, for Baxter was throughout the 1950's to offer his listeners package tours in sound. According to Toop Baxter's music provided 'running excursions for sedentary tourists who wanted to stroll around some taboo urges before lunch, view a pagan ceremony through gaps in the bamboo, go wild in the sun or conjure a demon, all without leaving home stereo comforts in the whitebread suburbs.' Baxter's albums carried titles such as Caribbean moonlight, Jewels of the Sea, Ritual of the Savage and Ports of Pleasure, and by hinting at sexual licentiousness in exotic landscapes, the music was to prove irresistible to a 1950's record buying public.
Toop is particularly good on inventive vocalists like Josephine Baker and Yma Sumac. When Baker arrived in Paris in 1925 as a dancer with La Revue Négre, she caused a sensation by exposing her breasts when she danced. Aspiring to chanson, she injected the medium with her atavistic African roots, so as to create an exotic vocal genre.
Yma Sumac noted for her collaboration with Les Baxter on Voice of the Xtabay, was an extraordinarily volatile singer of South American ancestry noted for her multi-octave range and freakishly histrionic tone. Sumac shared with Baxter and Denny the ability to transpose a spuriously sourced primitivism to the contrived medium of the Western recording studio.
David Toop is a marvellous guide to the curious, the bizarre, the culted and the durable in 20th century music. His book includes interviews with the eclectic likes of Burt Bacharach, Ornette Coleman, Bill Laswell, Maroumi Hosno and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the renowned Pakistani popular singer.
More than just a vibrantly maverick musician and musicologist David Toop writes with the exciting inventiveness of a fine prose stylist. This is a book to be ingested slowly and with careful attention paid to the originality of the author's metaphors. Exotica is a rich text in the best sense of contemporary writing.

They say poetry is dead...but Té

One of my favorite lines (among so many to choose from) is this: "she lay in living peaces, in my heart; only i know her to be wholly and acceptable in thy sight."

Té twists words into redemptive phrases that become poetry. Please do yourself and your soul (both the pain-stricken parts and the rejoicing ones) a favor and buy this book. Support living art + artists before they are no more.

I cannot recommend this book enough! A collection of poetry and prose that is written in a rich, sumptuous, evocative style and tackling many of the BIG SUBJECTS: love, loss, healing, God, loneliness, race, human connection and emotions, and family. Mr Smith writes in a style that keeps a foot in both the literary and the colloquial, weaving them together in short passages that are absolutely gorgeous to read and contain the most piercing kind of truth. It's one of those works of art that just hit you in the gut, send a shot though your heart and overwhelms you with compassion. This is the human experience! Don't hesitate to buy this book. It's the kind that you will reread, dog ear and underline and come back to in times of struggle for understanding and, ultimately, hope.

A Thing of Jaw-dropping Beauty, Awareness, and Confession

I'm gobsmacked by Té V. Smith's Here We Are, Reflections of a God Gone Mad. I can't stop reading it. I can't stop telling people about it. I can't stop giving it to friends. This collection of poetry and prose is gorgeous uncovering... a thing of jaw-dropping beauty, awareness, and confession. After each few passages, I find myself stopping to drink in their power. Occasionally, I swoon. I've been stunned by the familiarity of feeling wrapped in fresh words. Here We Are hits the heart with the intensity of that proverbial freight train. The second my eyes fell on the words "One day I will laugh and no loneliness will fall out", they filled with tears. Immediate visceral response. It's a true gift to be able to say, for the world, what it struggles to voice. Smith is gifted. So are we for having him here.

A Thorough Overview of Christian Faith and Beliefs

I bought this book for a course in Systematic Theology and am quite pleased with its thorough and well researched contents. "Biblical Theology" is the second edition of the original "Fundamentals of the Faith." This revised edition simplifies parts of the text and includes references that were not included in the first book. This book is exhaustive in the amount of material it covers. It also opened my eyes to a number of points of view I hadn't considered before. For example, on the matter of the Godhead or Trinity, Dr. Turner points out the different roles that God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit each played in the creation. He states that God is the Designer and Supreme Ruler; Jesus was the Creator or executor of that design; and the Holy Spirit was the organizer, beautifier and lawgiver. He goes on to substantiate his claims in a logical and persuasive manner.

Rex Turner, Sr. writes in the introduction of the book that "the book covers some heavy material, and hopefully, it does so in a way and manner that every person can understand and appreciate as he/she reads. One object of the author has been to make each chapter full and complete, and this fact accounts for considerable repetition, especially on certain subjects."

This is a great book. It , like many other theologies starts with the concepts of inspiration and revelation and then works through the various other concepts such as God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, salvation, etc.... from the perspective of the new covenant restorationist view. I found many pearls of wisdom to enjoy in my reading of this book, although I don't personally agree with every perspective of the author, it is refreshing in this day of liberalism and apostasy from true Christianity to find such a great theology to study.
