About the Author
Jules Archer was one of the most respected names in nonfiction for young people. During his lifetime he published over seventy books, which have been translated into twelve languages throughout the world. He lived in Scotts Valley, California until his death in 2008.
Naomi Wolf is the bestselling author of The Beauty Myth and a former political consultant for Al Gore’s presidential campaign. She is the leading spokes person for third wave feminism and has written for the Huffington Post, the Washington Post, and Harper’s Bazaar. Wolf is also a co-founder of The Woodhull Institute for Ethical Leadership, an organization that teaches young women about leadership.She lives in New York City.

Despite the fact that many Americans declare that they believe women should have equal rights (or believe that they do already), the word “feminist” is still fraught and one that some people struggle with or avoid. Frank and objective discussions of feminism in general discourse or in classrooms are rare, and thus many don’t have a good understanding of the struggles for gender equality in this country.
THE FEMINIST REVOLUTION by Jules Archer, which tells the story of three essential American feminists, has been republished with a new forward by Naomi Wolf. In examining the lives and work of Susan B. Anthony, Margaret Sanger and Betty Friedan, Archer gives young readers (and adults as well) the necessary background for understanding and analyzing the feminist movement in the US beginning in the mid-1800’s.
In the section on Susan B. Anthony, the book details her unflagging fight to secure the vote for American women. Inspired by her Quaker upbringing and her father’s liberal abolitionist beliefs, as well as the hard, thankless work she saw her mother do as the caretaker of the family’s six children, Anthony had an eye for justice. That sense of justice, coupled with a fierce intellect and relentless energy, led her to become the spokesperson for the suffragette movement.
Margaret Sanger is best known for her efforts to provide American women with information about birth control and family planning. As a nurse, she witnessed the emotional damage and physical pain of women pregnant with unwanted children. Sanger hoped that with information and safe medical care, women could choose when to become pregnant and the result would be a healthier population.
The third subject of Archer’s book is Betty Friedan. Born in 1921, Friedan was the face of the Women’s Liberation Movement and the second wave of American feminism. She was a tireless fighter for women’s rights from the foundation of the National Organization for Women to the 1970 strike in protest of oppressive working conditions for women. As author of THE FEMINIST MYSTIQUE, she brought her ideas into many American homes and classrooms --- she believed that the myth of the content, domestic, fully–feminine wife and mother discouraged women from pursuing dreams of careers or higher education.
All three of these feminists, and many others introduced in the book, changed the landscape of American culture and society. More mature readers can use this Insightful, honest and often personal book to start exploring feminism and the history of women in America. It is both readable and important.
