Essencial book for Flores or Corvo genealogists

If you're doing genealogy research in Flores or Corvo, this book is essencial. Don't let the fact that it's in Portuguese stop you from buying it. The book is basically a list of marriage records, with the groom's name, his parents and then the bride's name and her parents, also indicating other information such as their age, and date of marriage. Anyone will be able to master the few Portuguese words required to read it in no time. And for all others, Google Translate is your friend.

An essential reference for anyone researching family history and genealogy on the Azores Islands of Flores and Corvo. The original records are in many cases faded scribbles, using hard-to-decipher abbreviations, and having a transcribed version makes genealogy research possible. The only problem I have with the book is that it is organized by name of parish, not by name of town, so one needs to know the parish name in order to find the information. And one can get carpal tunnel syndrome paging through the kindle version before one gets to the right page, as there are no indexing links to different parts of the alphabet.

THE BEST REFERENCE ON EZEKIEL'S TEMPLE

Of all the books I own concerning Ezekiel's prophecies (and I have many) this is BY FAR THE BEST and complete I have ever read. Best of all, it lines up with the Scriptures (for the most part; he believes in "soul sleep" which I disagree with). Many Old Testament teachers & commentators incorrectly allegorize the unfulfilled OT prophecies or follow faulty "replacement theology." But Sulley does a great job at showing why Ezekiel's prophecy is in fact LITERAL and COMING SOON; and he encourages you to do your part to be ready for it. After all, if Yeshua's first coming of virgin birth, death and resurrection was FULFILLED LITERALLY - why wouldn't the remainder of the OT prophecies be literally fulfilled as well? Anyway, don't take my word for it, prayerfully check this one out for yourself.

Additionally, as an architect, he was inspired to create future temple / Zion drawings based on Ezekiel, Isaiah, Zechariah, etc. - quite like nothing else produced. They are stunning and give us a glimpse of what's to come! And forget that "King David is the prince" theory; Sulley accurately explains how Ezekiel's Prince can be none other than Israel's Messiah - the great Shepherd and heir to David's throne! This under-appreciated labor of love is over 100 years old (either before it's time or we're slow at catching on). Should be "required reading" for Bible teachers, pastors, seminary / Bible school students - in my opinion.

The writer deals with this subject out of the Love he had in his heart fro the Word of God and the promises made to Abraham, Issac and Israel (Jacob). The writer places his heart and mind into the hands of The Father who guides him through his studies to bring out the joy of the promise of the Kingdom of God on earth and the return of the Messiah to reconcile mankind back to God and return the earth to the beauty and joy that was in the mind of The Father at creation. The promise of eternal life to those who believe and are baptised into the name of The Lord Jesus Christ is enhanced and the fire in the hearts fed with the fuel of God's word and Love that can only come from God and His son. Enjoy and be enriched.

This book attempts to describe profound religious experience that occurs at the visceral, non-rational level. In doing so, the author coins some latin phrases that have since become embedded in the literature on religion: (1) the NUMINOUS, which is the extra meaning of "the Holy" beyond simple "goodness"; and also (2) the MYSTERIUM TREMENDUM, the nature of the numinous, which connotes "awefulness" (the terror of God or the Other World, which Otto argues is the starting point for the historical development of religion), "overpoweringness" (in which we feel dwarfed into insignificance), "energy" (religious fervor), the "wholly other" (that which is outside the realm of our senses or common experience), and "fascination" (wonderfulness or grace).
This brief summary doesn't really do justice to Otto's description. Reading the first 70 or so pages of the text, you begin to get his emotional-level understanding of the horrifying, alien, shocks-you-out-of-this-world, yet somehow compelling nature of direct confrontation with the transcendent.
He stretches to describe some of the concepts. On the element of "awefulness", for example, he runs through this series of similar concepts: tremor -> fear -> hallow -> fear of god -> august -> grue -> grisly -> dread -> awe - > daemonic dread -> something uncanny -> eerie -> weird.
Otto relies on a concept he derives from Kant called "schematization". He uses it to associate rational ideas with non-rational ideas. For example, physical sex schematizes "love"; written or recorded songs schematize "musical feeling"; the sublime feeling we get from written text or works of art schematizes "the Holy". It's important not to confuse the schematization with the thing itself: so the "morally good" schematizes "the Holy", but the "morally good" is not the Holy.
I thought the text bogged down quite a bit after the first 100 pages or so. He spends three whole chapters arguing with Schleiermacher's concept of "Divination", for example (it's a type of recognition or gnosis of the Holy). But the first half is definitely worth reading, though a bit difficult.

A Revelation...

Living as we do in an age where religion in general (and Christianity specifically) has been largely co-opted by those who consider it to be "morality touched with emotion", "The Idea of the Holy" offers a alternative view towards religion and spirituality. Otto introduces a way of approaching the subject that avoids the twin traps of emotion and intellect, allowing us to understand "religious feeling" as a phenomenon all it's own, as a "sense' with its own attributes.
For those who can (through scholarship or patience) penetrate the sometimes dense and dated prose, this book has the potential to remove the debris of thousands of years of so-called theology and philosophy and to find the experience of God without intermediaries. It is indeed, a revelation.

This book, first published in 1917, is rightly regarded as a classic of religious philosophy.

Otto's great contribution to Christianity was to assert the importance of a non-rational approach to the divine. Christianity, which is the most dogmatic and moralistic of the major world religions, needed the corrective. Otto created the word "numinous" to stand for the sense of a divine presence that operates beyond rational understanding. He also coined the term "mysterium tremendum" to connote the inchoate sense of awe and dread that humans feel in the presence of the divine. To him, both of these ideas were essential to a full expression of the religious spirit.

One reaction to this book over the years goes something like this: either you've been knocked off your horse like St Paul, in which case you already have a direct experience of the numinous, or you haven't. Why bother to analyze something that by its very nature can't be put into words? Here Otto makes a subtle but crucial distinction. He's not talking about a numinous feeling, but about a feeling of the numinous. In other words, the numinous exists out there, not inside us, so we can approach it as an object to be observed and, at least by analogy to the sensations it excites with us, described.

Otto didn't reject the rational, though. Without rationality, he says, we can't have belief, only feelings. In his view of religion, the rational and non-rational interpenetrate each other like the warp and woof of a fabric, which can't be separated without destroying the very garment it makes. He points out several times that fully understanding the non-rational conception of god deepens our rational religious ideas.

Otto was a Christian, and believed deeply in the superiority of Christianity as the highest synthesis of the rational and moral with a primal sense of awe. (Buddhists might differ.) Fortunately for his reputation as a religious philosopher he was much more than a Christian apologist: he was a close observer of human behavior and of religious practices around the world. If Otto had been born seventy five years later, he might have been Joseph Campbell. He traveled widely, and had a deep knowledge and appreciation of Asian, Arabic and Greek religious thought. He anticipated Campbell by demonstrating that a sense of spiritual awe and mystery is universal to all religions.

In his observations of how mankind divines the presence of the holy, Otto realized the importance of predispositions - a person must be both receptive to divine presence and capable of recognizing when it appears. In this he anticipates neural Darwinism, which also talks about our predisposition toward certain aspects of reality. For instance, we have evolved an ability to recognize sound patterns. This isn't music, but it allows us to hear a song and store it as such in our brain. Similarly, we are capable of conceiving of an overarching force that exists beyond our selves, and are capable of recognizing manifestations of it. This isn't religion, but it's the precursor to any truly religious feeling.

This book strikes sparks in almost every chapter, even the ones settling obscure doctrinal scores. It deserves the high regard in which it's held because Rudolf Otto is a remarkably good guide to the ineffable.

"But in the movie....."

Very often, trying to discuss a great book with others gets hampered by that unique Americanism of thinking that "the FILM is the accurate interpretation of the book!" This conceit is especially incorrect in the case of Isherwood's novel with its subtle characterization and not-quite-spelled-out episodes and descriptions.

Tom Ford produced a striking and visually pleasing movie, but it does not contain the truest and best essence of George's life in 1962 California as a depressed and heart-broken gay man. So many of Isherwood's details about George's life and thoughts were lost in the film that I think it is fair to claim that, while the bare bones of the story are very similar, the deepest and most meaningful moments have been lost. Thus, people who have seen the film are convinced - incorrectly - that they have understood the full story.

I don't want to list spoilers here for potential readers. I only say this: Read this novel and savor the real angst and the unique twists that comprise George's day. You will come to know a deeper and more empathetic and well-drawn man than the film by the same title has shown you.

A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood

This is a tale of grieving and redemption.

This is a day in the life of George, a British English schoolteacher at San Tomas Sate College in Southern California, who is mourning the loss of his life partner, Jim. We see him get out of bed, perform his daily routine, and try to cope with his terrible loss.

Jim died at a car accident in Mexico when he was traveling with his mistress, Doris. Doris survived the accident but she's in a vegetative state. George visits her once a week - mostly because is the only thing left that is purely Jim.

Charlotte is George's best friend. Also a British, Charlotte is mourning her failed marriage with Buddy and an empty nest - as her son, Fred has finally left her to live with his girlfriend.

But redemption comes to George, Kenny Potter, one of his students, follows George to his favorite bar - a dive where he and Jim met. Kenny flirts with George and because they are so drunk, they end up together. Although George knows that this will probably be a one time thing, the redemption comes with the knowledge that George is helping Kenny deal with his homosexuality.

Beautifully told from an universal point of view, the story deals with the loss of a loved one, even one who clearly broke the trust between a couple. George clearly blames Doris for Jim's death, yet one wonders if he had lost Jim irregardless.

Isherwood is clearly aware that gays are being persecuted and presents a clear perspective of the gay man in the 1960's: "A minority has its own kind of aggression. It absolutely dares the majority to attack it. It hates the majority - not without a cause, I grant you. It even hates the other minorities, because all minorities are in competition: each one proclaims that its sufferings are the worst and its wrongs are the blackest. And the more they all hate, and the more they're all persecuted, the nastier they become! Do you think it makes people nasty to be loved? You know it doesn't! Then why should it make them nice to be loathed? While you're being persecuted, you hate what's happening to you, you hate the people who are making it happen; you're in a world of hate. Why, you wouldn't recognize love if you met it! You'd suspect love! You'd think there was something behind it - some motive - some trick...."

I wonder if the book would had a different ending, now that gays are more accepted by society....

Sad, Intelligent, Greatly Moving Novel

After hearing the buzz about the upcoming movie adaptation I was excited to read anything that was considered great in the gay fiction genre, and how happy I am that I did! I must admit I'd never heard of this book or its acclaimed author, which makes me sad. Irsherwood's prose is so poignant and intelligent I don't see how he isn't more well known.

A Single Man all takes place in a day, some time after George's lover has died. Isherwood describes everything very honestly, making no attempt to romanticize anything, and presents everything with blunt accuracy. Though the novel is short, there is a lot that happens during this one day with George, even if most of it is in his mind. Personally I'm very interested in how the movie is going to be done because so much of the novel is the thoughts of George, and there aren't a lot of scenes per se. Every written word is brilliant and beautiful, however. If you are in college, teach college, or have been in college you will relish the detailed descriptions as George teaches his class and goes about the campus. Like I said, this is a very intellectual novel, and if you are only interested in sweeping romance or blockbuster scenes, this isn't the book for you. It is smart, but not hard to read, though, so even if you are one of those people, I think it'd be hard not to enjoy the heartbreaking honesty. It is about love, it's about life, it's about hardship, it's about society.. I really can't justify how good it is in a review, except that I assure: you will gain something from reading this book. Whether you are gay or straight, male or female, or anyone in the world, it is powerful and you will feel moved by it.
