The affects of child abuse in adults written into a novel.

This detailed review by Instaread of the book, God Help the Child by Toni Morrison, starts off with an 8 page summary. The original novel "focuses on how adults are affected by what happened to them when they were children." Bride, originally called Lulu Ann, has a mother who despises her due to the darkness of her skin. (Bride's parents are both lighter skinned.) How does this affect Bride?

In the "Main Characters" we are provided with short bios on ten characters. This is followed with more detailed analysis on five of those characters and is really informative. The majority of the characters in the book suffered significant trauma in their childhood affecting their adult lives.

Themes discussed are:
Effects of childhood trauma on adult lives - lasting scars
Lies, guilt, kidnapping, racism and more
Element of an enchanted fairy tale - at times in the story Bride's body changes, reverting to a child. Is this all in her mind? Where does Cinderella come in?

The "Author's Style" section shares with the reader how the author has written about the horrors of child abuse in a poetic style whilst also ending on a positive note.

Captures the message concisely!

Great review of “God Help the Child” by Toni Morrison. It captures the depth of this dramatic novel while maintaining an easy to read format. It was easy to read, and formatted to make skimming even easier. If you’re in need of a quick guide to understanding the book without being bogged down with a long novel, then this is a great review for you.

The character analysis was good, but not thorough enough in my opinion. The relationship analysis was one sided, focusing on how Bride’s relationships with some of the characters. I wish there was more analysis with other characters. But that’s a small thing.

This book is a great resource for students needing help on their book reports and for everyone else who needs a condensed read. It captures the themes of reading while not consuming all your time. A great review of “God Help the Child”

Kudos for Baroque

The cover alone will stop you in your tracks, a magnificent photograph of the Hofburg Library in Vienna. Open the cover and you will find page after page of amazingly detailed color photos of architecture, sculpture, and paintings. And to top it off, the text is generally interesting without any mindnumbing pedantic nose-in-the-air commentary. I have been an architect for 25 years and have never stopped searching for a reasonably priced book of Baroque with high quality pictures and text. This is it.

The mother of all coffee table books?

The text of this book is boring, tedious and frequently gets bogged down in little details.

So why did I give it five stars?

It's because of the photos! The book is 500 pages long, and there are literally hundreds of full-color photographs of Baroque palaces, cathedrals, paintings and sculptures. The book pages are very large, and this makes the photos large and detailed as well. But the most sensational thing is the price: only 25 dollars for the hardback edition! Trust me, a book like this usually goes for 100 dollars or more. Perhaps it's subsidized by some UN agency? (A caveat: Since the book is very heavy, the postage might be larger than average.)

Rolf Toman's "Baroque" is probably mostly directed at students of European art and architecture. As already noted, the text quickly gets tedious for the non-specialist, with details of 17th century Italian architects and the popes who paid their barbills. However, the stunning illustrations make the book an excellent birthday or Christmas gift even for general readers. I bought the Swedish translation for my mother last Christmas.

In a sense, this is the mother of all coffee table books. If you have it on your coffee table or book shelf, you will be sure to impress your friends. Just don't tell them you got it at bargain price!

The Baroque is a period in West European art history that began around AD 1600 and ended around AD 1750. Versailles in France is the most well-known example of Baroque architecture. Many churches and palaces in Rome are considered Baroque. The Baroque even spread to South and Central America, due to the Spanish and Portuguese conquests.

Rolf Toman's book concentrates on French, Italian, Spanish and German architecture. There are shorter chapters on the other European nations, and an even shorter chapter on colonial Baroque. Further, the book contains sections on Baroque painting and sculpture, with exquisite photos of 17th and 18th century paintings from various European museums. The notorious Rococo style is mentioned only in passing.

The Baroque has been much maligned. It's ostentation, connections to royal absolutism and Catholic counter-reformation, and supposed evolution into the Rococo, all has come up for criticism. And yes, the Early Modern Period wasn't a particularly happy one. I mean, the French revolution didn't exactly fall from the skies! Still, from an aesthetic point of view, the art of the period seems grossly underrated.

Recommended.

PS. I have only seen (the Swedish) HARDBACK edition of this book. How the paperback edition looks like, I don't know. It seems to be even cheaper!

Stunning photos of interiors, exteriors, and some of the gardens of palaces, cathedrals, and villas.

Absolutely stunning photos of great Baroque palaces, cathedrals, and villas. Also includes sculpture and paintings. I am particularly interested in the Baroque and Rococo architecture and thoroughly enjoyed the photos of the interiors and exteriors of the buildings and also the photos of the gardens. The book includes buildings from Italy, France, Britain, Germany, Austria, Holland, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, Eastern Europe, and Russia. Well worth having! My only criticism is that the lettering for the text is a bit on the small side -- I would guess it is must be around 8 point. I guess that's the price for having a lot of information packed into a book this size.

The connection between Locke and colonial clergy, Dworetz maintains, constitutes a significant, radicalizing force in American revolutionary thought.

Deciphering the American Revolution--and its historiography

A useful summary and critique of the changing paradigms of the historiography of the American Revolution as it shifts ground between the Lockean interpretations and the more recent revisionist accounts based on the issues of civic republicanism
proposed by Pocock in his Machiavellian Moment. Another work similar to this is Diggins' The Lost Soul of American Politics (and also On Hallowed Ground). The view of Locke from the left (entirely useful up to a point) has long created a kind of mental block as to this seminal figure, but it was hard to disown him from his seminal place in the generation of modern liberalism, and it is just as hard to see how Machiavellian republicanism can be taken as a substitute. But then that's the debate, and a review of the different perspectives is well served by this reflective account, among others.

About the Author
R. Ian Faulconbridge is a senior lecturer at the University of New South Wales, where he received his M.Eng.Sc. in electrical engineering. He received his M.B.A. in project management from the University of Southern Queensland.

Michael J. Ryan serves as senior lecturer at the University of New South Wales. He earned his M.Eng.Sc. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering at this university.

Systems Engineering - A Good Introduction

Good introductory book on Systems Engineering, covering most important subjects (Introduction to Sys. Eng., Conceptual, Preliminary and Detailed Design and Development, and a nice chapter on Engineering Management).

In some figures it presents a process for engineering a system, along with explanation and examples. I enjoyed A LOT this approach.

Presents information on standards (MIL-STD-499B, IEEE-1220, EIA-632) and a brief overview of SEI's Capability Maturity Model for Systems Engineering (CMM-SE).

What I liked is that it is "straight to the point" and an easy to read book.

Downside: it has no exercises at the end of each chapter.

I recommend it for both students and practitioners.

Outstanding text on systems engineering

This is the text used by the University of New South Wales to teach Systems Engineering. It is a practical text and a very useful reference book. For anyone involved with systems engineering, project management of technical projects, or government procurement activity of technical goods or services - this is a must read.
