A First Reform 'Judaism and Islam' engagement

In the Middle Ages comparative religion texts were always polemical. Then came the (objective?) academic study of religion and comparative religion became skeptical but usually more of the 'other' than of your own. Only in our generation is any serious work being done that assumes that God's influence is both real and pluralistic. Gieger's book represents the start of the academic phase 180 years ago. It is much less anti Muslim than most 19th century Christian Academic views, but still a product of its times. Rabbi Allen S. Maller

It has always been interesting talk about the interplay of Judaism, Islam and Christianity; their common ancestry and roots. Abraham Geiger's work does just that and was written a hundred and eighty years ago!
Our faith journey should not be undertaken in fear or with trepidation but rather in the hope of understanding.

About the Author
Jean-Noel Kapferer is a worldwide thought leader and expert on brand management. His latest best-setting book The New Strategic Brand Management (also published by Kogan Page) is the key reference work for top-level international MBAs. Professor at HEC Paris, the luxury research centre in Europe, he holds the Pernod-Ricard Chair on Prestige and Luxury Management. Also a consultant, he is a member of the board of major brands, and regularly gives executive seminars on luxury in the United States, China, Japan, Korea and India. He holds a PhD from Northwestern University (USA).

Vincent Bastien is one of the most experienced senior managers in the luxury business. For over 25 years, he has been CEO or MD of international companies, both in luxury including six years as MD of Louis Vuitton Malletier and three years as MD of the beauty division of Sanofi group (including Yves Saint Laurent, Nina Ricci, Yves Rocher, and Parfums Oscar de la Renta, Van Cleef & Arpels and Fendi) and in business-to-business industries (glass, printing). During the same period, he managed his own company in ready-to-wear clothing. He is now Affiliate Professor at HEC Paris, where he teaches Strategy in Luxury.

The best book on Luxury Strategy

This is a unique book and very interesting for people involved in understanding the current and future luxury industry characteristics. It discusses the main issues and principles of luxury management, it is very clear and it mentions many practical cases from this industry. It clarifies the borders of real luxury, it is a perfect guide for entrepreneurs and managers which want to succeed in luxury branding. I suggest to read this book because it is different from the others and it is written by two internationally recognized experts in this field.

A thorough examination of the rules of luxury

I'm convinced; if a brand fully commits to the points made in this book, it will achieve wild success. The only catch; everyone will compromise in their execution of a luxury strategy, and that is the one thing a brand can not do if it truly wants to be a luxury brand.

The essential point of the book. Operate your brand like it's a religion. Seriously, luxury is consumption raised to the level of religion.

My only knock; it can read like a college-text, and some of the author's points are repeated to excess.

As a professional on Luxury and Licensing, I have really appreciated this book nice to read and, in particular, its normative speech that sets it apart from other books on the same subject: not only a description of what's done but also what should be done and what should not be done.
As an example, I think it is a useful reading if you want to know "when, how and why leave the luxury sector"! To enter the luxury market or to get out of it are corporate strategies that need to be clearly decided before implementation.

Wow oh WOW is all I could say. Short but so unbelievably fantastic. When you first start reading you feel sorry for Raven, Linc was so mean but you could feel the sexual tension between the 2 of them. It just got better and the sex scene was OMG hot and steamy. Can not wait for the next book. Another book hit out of the park Danielle. Loved it and you.

I am an avid reader..at the least, I read two books a day (I am a fast reader). I went ahead and purchased this book because I have read other books by this author and really enjoyed them. What happened?? At 58%..the actual story ended and the rest of the book was snippets from other books. I AM SO VERY disappointed. I feel like I paid for highlights. Ugh!! It completely took any possible joy I could have gotten from the actual story!

Not as described.

Okay so the book, was a decent book. I liked that you could feel the lust between the two man characters and even though Linc was a bit of a jerk, I liked him. But then again, I like jerks. However there were still editing highlights that were never corrected and even more that needed to be done. Secondly the book states 165 pages. It's not even close, the story ends at like the 60% mark. So for those reasons, I had to rate it down.

Classics!

I remember finding this book in my mom's collection back when I was about 7 or 8 yrs old, and it's probably the reason I became a horror reader. The stories are all well-known classics (The Monkey's Paw being my favorite of the bunch), but it's the artwork that makes this a must-have. Each story is beautifully/grossly illustrated, and if they wouldnt scare guests, I'd frame the pages themselves! (Ya I'm sick!) If you can find it, get it!

Highly recommended if you like classic horror and great art

My brother was given this book a gift when we were kids and we poured through the pictures and stories for years until many moves later, it was lost. more than 35 years later I went looking for it and found it. Much beloved classic ghost stories and the paintings in the book has inspired a lifetime love of art and the macabre. Best of its kind out there.

'The journey has come back to where it first began'

Abba Eban was one of Israel's greatest statesmen. Here the man who helped to make history, documents the history of his own people.My People: The Story of the Jews is the history of the Jewish Nation from the time of Abram and his journey into Canaan, until 1968 CE.

He points out that just as the history of the Jewish Nation began in the Land of Israel, with the return of the Jews to Israel and the re-establishment of the State of Israel 'The journey has come back to where it first began'.
Eban covers the story of Abram and his journey to Canaan, the sojourn of the Israelites in Egypt, and their return to Canaan under Joshuah's leadership.
He succintly and skilfully describes the history of ancient Israel describing the great Commonwelath of David and Solomon, the division of the Land of Israel into two Kingdoms, and the wisdom of the Prophets.

He describes how 'Israel's history assumes a unique quality with the Babylonian captivity.Many people have preserved their nationalism on their own soil, even under foreign conquest, but never before had any people preserved it's national identity and spiritual distinctiveness in exile for thousands of years with sufficient vitality to ensure an ultimate rebirth'.
Through millenia the Nation of Israel has remained a unique nation, even in exile retaining it's eternal link with the Land of Israel.
As we progress through the history of the Jewish people through the Greek and Roman conquests and the courageous resistance of the Jews to the ocupation of their homeland, through the destruction of the temple and the eventual exile from the land we are reminded of this.
One must remember that there always remained a Jewish presence in the Land of Israel, throughout the exile, There was never a time when there were no Jews in the Holy Land. This is a story of endurance and renewal. It is a story of how the Jews survived all the massacres and persecution, from the Romans to the Crusaders who swept across Europe anihilating Jewish communities, to the horrific Chmielnitzki massacres and the pogroms in Eastern Europe, the Jews endured.
They refused to assimilate or renounce their faith.
Some like Mohammed and Martin Luther began with a sympathetic attitude to the Jews in the hope that the Jews would adopt these men's religions. When the Jews refused they turned on the Jews with savagery and hate.
The greatest miracle of all was the return to Zion.
We learn the real reason why the Arab leaders opposed the retun of the Jews to their ancient homeland. The doctrine of political equality and social justice that had swept through Europe and later across the Atlantic had made no impression on the dark Arab hinterland, and the Arab leaders and landowner feared the influence the Jewish example of democracy and socail justice would make on their own downtrodden masses.
That is why they stirred up their subjects to attack the Jewish returnees as they have been doing since 1920.
Describing the new Jewish communities set up in the Holy Land in the 1920s and 30s, many of them refugees from Nazi Germany, Eban describes how
'Settlement. cultivation of the land, and self-defence, were the practical answer of Palestine Jewry to Arab hostility and British vacillation. The response was coloured by an awareness of the inherent right of peoples to self-protection and by a belief in the inalienable dignity of human life as a principle from which Jewish life should not be excluded. The years 1939 to 1945 would see that principle shattered across the bloodstained continent of Europe'.
Eban stresses how the Zionist leadership tried to warn the world of the impending holocaust by the Nazis of world Jewry, and in vain urged the allies to act to save the 6 million Jews.
As Ebban describes the rebirth of the State of Israel and the wars of defence, he also stresses the great achievements in culture, medicine, humanity and science made by the Jewish State.
An answer to the vile critics of Israel today :"It is not an offense against the Middle Eastern traditions for a non-Arab and non-Moslem sovereignty to live and flourish in the original home of Hebrew memory and thought. The question is not whetherb Israel will change it's special nature, but whether the Arabs will come to terms with Israel as it is".
In discussing the Six Day War Ebban describes how the Arabs surrounded Israel with troops and weapons, openly threatening Israel and issuing threats of anihilation, much like those being currently issued by Iranian modern day Hitler, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
The Six Day War was forced on Israel by the Arabs.
Essentially we are left marvelling how a world that once thundered at the Jews to get out of every land they lived in are now thundering at the Jews to leave their ancient homeland.
Abba Eban was a great statesman and leader and also proves that he was a great historian and writer. It is a pity he is no longer with us.

About the Author
Danny King was born in Slough, near London in 1969. After leaving school, he went to work on a building site where he met his fair share of petty criminals and general nutters. In the late 1980s, following convictions of various offences, including burglary, he gave up crime, got an education and started to work as a journalist on top shelf magazines. He lives in South London.

A series of short stories

If you are in the mood for a series of slightly related, humorous short stories then this book is for you. There is not a single story line that ties all of the stories together. Overall a fun group of stories.

Foul mouthed, irreverent and authentic

Bex and Ollie spend their evenings in their dreary South-Eastern town either boozing or burgling. Narrator Bex takes his clandestine activities very seriously, and considers his thieving a trade, with skills to be honed and a moral code to be observed. His unflinching observations of every character, including himself, are perfectly pitched and blackly hilarious.

There's little happiness in Bex's life and even less glory or success, but he's honest about his failings and his prospects and it's this, along with his redemptive qualities and self-deprecating humour which King combines so well.

For some reason I couldn't put it down

I'm not a big fan of constant profanity but King' s characters seem to require it and they become loveable in a crude sort of way. King is a much better storyteller than writer (and proofreader) which makes you feel it's all genuine inside those pubs, flats and jails of Britain. This is my second Danny King book after reading The Henchmen's Book Club and I'll probably end up reading most of his works when I need a fun and funny read.

Keeping up with the Joneses: Envy in American Consumer Society, 1890-1930 examines a key transition in the meaning of envy for the American middle class. Although people certainly have experienced envy throughout history, the expansion of the consumer economy at the turn of the twentieth century dramatically reshaped the social role of the emotion. Matt looks at how different groups within the middle class—men in white-collar jobs, bourgeois women, farm families, and children—responded to the transformation in social and cultural life.

Keeping Up with the Joneses traces how attitudes about envy changed as department stores, mail-order catalogs, magazines, movies, and advertising became more prevalent, and the mass production of imitation luxury goods offered middle- and working-class individuals the opportunity to emulate upper-class life. Between 1890 and 1910 moralists sought to tame envy and emulation in order to uphold a moral economy and preserve social order. They criticized the liberal-capitalist preoccupation with personal striving and advancement and praised the virtue of contentment. They admonished the bourgeoisie to be satisfied with their circumstances and cease yearning for their neighbors' possessions. After 1910 more secular commentators gained ground, repudiating the doctrine of contentment and rejecting the notion that there were divinely ordained limits on what each class should possess. They encouraged everyone to pursue the objects of desire. Envy was no longer a sin, but a valuable economic stimulant.

The expansion of consumer economy fostered such institutions as department stores and advertising firms, but it also depended on a transformation in attitudes and emotional codes. Matt explores the ways gender, geography, and age shaped this transformation. Bridging the history of emotions and the history of consumerism, she uncovers the connection between changing social norms and the growth of the consumer economy.

Matt offers something special in this book. I read it for a history course in undergrad (if you go to UNCW and have Dr. Gordon you may read it). Its a great read though even as a non-fiction. The book tracks the birth of consumerism in the United States, which was a nascent concept in the period Matt addresses. It truly is amazing at how Americans went from satisfied and content individuals to product hungry mongers in only a couple short decades... Obviously the industrial revolution provided the platform with the goods, but nevertheless it is quite amazing to think about what this nation was before consumerism hit and became a staple in both our economy and our everyday lives. As I recall, this book may also address the advertising devlopment that directly correllated with consumerism itself.

Great read and it will enlighten you and make you think about your next frivilous purchase from Amazon and whether or not you are just "keeping up with the joneses"

A history of envy at the turn of the 19th century that documents how envy transitioned from something that was sinful (particularly among women) to something that was acceptable and even good for society. This shift was due to an Darwinism, secularism, movies, and complemented the growth of consumer culture (advertising, installment purchasing,department stores, mail order catalogs, mass circulation magazines, and movies). Matt did a wonderful job in writing a detailed and accessible work; she includes many sources in her work and images of ads from the period. Her main thesis of this transition is shown among "city women and the quest for status," "envy in the office," on the farm, and among children.
