Great Book, Great Drummer

The book does several things:

1) It teaches the drummer how to read music. Most drummers skip this essential skill and play by ear.

2) The CD that comes with the book has a full band with the drum track you're learning. You learn a short riff, then play along with the band. Much more fun than playing in isolation w/out any other instruments. Plus, you can try out different "textures" as you play, to see how it sounds with other instruments.

3) You learn different styles. Even in this book (Level 1) the student gets exposure to different styles of music, which really makes it more fun and challenging.

I've had two drum instructors: The first one more or less taught me to play by ear and because he was a rock drummer, that's what I learned. The second instructor was Scott Schroedl (the author). This guy is the real deal. An amazing drummer.

I'm not writing this as a favor to Mr. Schroedl, rather I'm writing this because his method worked for me.

It's working great for me - a total beginner!

I bought this book several years ago when I bought a small electronic drum pad, but never opened it until I bought a full electronic drum set a few weeks ago. It is working very well for me, and I have progressed through about a third of the book. The CD is very helpful. In addition to letting you hear what the beat is supposed to sound like, it is much more interresting to play the beats to the accompanying music on the CD rather than just playing the drums by themselves. I highly recommend the book.

A good start

I love how this book is grounded in written music and that it comes with music to play along with on CD. I ripped the tracks onto my iPod and put each track on loop until I get each down. I'm about halfway through the book and I'm really liking the method presented.

Excellent Story

The plot is not overly complicated--not if you're used to reading mysteries with more depth that Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys. My book had excellent print quality, which leads me to believe the person with the badly printed book should have exchanged it for a good copy. I've read everything C.J. Box has published and though I love the Joe Pickett novels, I really liked this stand-alone and I hope Box writes more like this. The action is interspersed with times of thinking on the protagonists parts but when the whole story was done, everything came together in a logical way. It was an excellent read and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes mystery and action all in one novel.

Interesting Mystery

is is the first time I have read anything by CJ Box and I was pleasantly surprised. When a cache of former LA cops enters the Idaho valley, nothing seems amiss at first glance. But then Annie and William witness a murder and things change dramatically. Nothing is as it seems, which not only poses problems for the children, but for everyone in the town. At this point, trust becomes an underlying theme at nearly every turn. Cleverly evading both the killers and subsequent town-wide search volunteers, the children happen upon a barn owned by Jess, a long-time rancher who is having problems of his own. From there the book is not so much a mystery as it is suspense, which CJ Box is able to maintain for the rest of the book. Remorse and retribution are added as elements of the human condition and the listener is further drawn into the plot asking "I wonder what I would have done?" The end is appropriately frustrating because not everyone rides off into the sunset happy. The battle of good versus evil doesn't end fairly although the reader wants it to end that way. Nevertheless, it's understood that the tale accurately mimics real life which is, in its own way, satisfying.

Great story, but a bit rough around the edges

First, a disclaimer: "Blue Heaven" is the first of Mr. Box's novels that I have read, and I picked it up because it won an Edgar (I was hooked after reading the Kindle "free sample" first chapter, in which two children witness a murder and are pursued through the woods). This is a review of "Blue Heaven", not a polemic on the relative merits of book awards, but I will make a brief digression on the subject:

Reading award-winners is not a strategy I often follow, but I like the Edgar awards (and the Mystery Writers of America), because they seem relatively free of the pretension, vanity, and faddish-ness that pervades other literary awards. Therefore I at least try to peruse the fiction nominees and winners. There are so many books out there, and without the Edgars I would never have been aware of Mr. Box's novel. So thank you, MWA.

Now, back to "Blue Heaven". Other reviewers have perceptively noted that this is a modern Western, in ways both subtle and obvious. The obvious western touches include the setting--it takes place in the Mountain West (North Idaho)--and a hero who is, literally, a cowboy. The less-obvious Western hallmarks are found in the narrative structure. Much like a classic Western, the bad guys are known from the beginning (it is not a mystery in the classic sense). Furthermore, the novel builds to an inevitable showdown between the hero and the villains, a final, frenzied scene of violence that would not be out of place in a dusty, sun-bleached frontier town of the late 19th century.

Although the villains are revealed at the outset, Mr. Box takes more time to explain the motives for their crimes, but the "why" is never really important. Indeed, the back-story of the original crime that motivates the rest of the narrative is one of the book's weak points, but the novel is little affected by it. Mr. Box seems to understand the concept that Alfred Hitchcock famously labeled "the MacGuffin". That is, the motivating crime doesn't really matter if the characters are compelling and the action is well-written. Mr. Box succeeds admirably on both counts, and it's enough to know that these dudes did something bad, and they don't want anyone to know about it.

After slogging through another Lee Child book (my last, I assure you--I had read one before and did not like it much, and decided to give him another chance since he seems to be so popular...a complete waste of time), it was refreshing to pick up "Blue Heaven" and encounter such richly drawn characters. Whereas Mr. Child's Jack Reacher is inhuman and boring, Jess Rawlins is an immensely sympathetic hero who is also (GASP!) 63 years old, a cuckold, and on the verge of losing his ranch due to financial mismanagement. He is divorced and estranged from his only child. He is also a man out of touch with the times, cut from an older cloth of simplicity, duty and honor; he is at once pitiful and admirable. This ambivalence carries over to Mr. Box's other characters. The author does an admirable job of creating figures who inhabit a world of real emotion--of joy and sorrow, ambition and greed, success and failure, hope and disappointment, and of love, as well. They live lives in which decisions have consequences, often unanticipated and far-reaching.

Mr. Box balances his cast of characters throughout the story, frequently changing perspectives as the narrative progresses through an extremely busy weekend. Juggling all of these points of view while sustaining coherence and momentum is no mean feat, and Mr. Box largely succeeds. There are a few miscues. For example, (spoiler alert) it's never entirely clear why an apparent samaritan who turns out to be one of the villains fails to hand the witnesses over to his co-conspirators. But overall, the plot development is engaging and exciting.

As I mentioned above, I am not familiar with Mr. Box's other work. Upon reading this book, I was left impressed by his plotting and characterizations, and somewhat disappointed by his style. He has a knack for evoking personal detail and drawing compelling sketches of his characters, and he writes action sequences with the brisk, simple style that befits them. But throughout the novel I encountered wince-inducing turns of phrase that should have been weeded out by a good editor. "Blue Heaven" is riddled with amateurish writing, which is why I was surprised when I discovered that Mr. Box had so many other, prior books. I repeatedly found myself taken in by the story, only to be jolted by some very poor writing choices. It's unfortunate, because it mars what is an otherwise entertaining and ambitious book.

It could have been great, but I'll settle for very, very good.

Today is the perfect day for a good book and a hot cup of tea. "The Tea Book" gives you everything you need to know about tea from how tea is enjoyed around the world to The History of Tea, Plant to Pot, Drinking Tea and recipes for teas and mixed drinks as well as dishes either to go with your tea or made using tea. This is an informative, fun book that is as great to read as it is to cook from.

The recipes are varied and range from Tea-Infused Beef on a Green Papaya Salad to Matcha and Chocolate Shortbread and Tea Smoked Duck Breasts with Spiced Pears. My favorite recipe is the Earl Grey Hearts, a delicate shortbread-type cookie with the subtle flavor of Earl Grey tea. They are easy to make and an absolute delight to eat!

Whether your interest is in history, the correct etiquette of tea drinking around the world, or just a good cup of tea, this book has you covered. Hmmm. I think I'll go brew another pot.

For the love of tea

Kilby and Cheadle have produced a most wonderful book. It's more than a book, really. If you're a foodie, science and history geek like I am, this is just for you. It's so interesting to see the variety of tea produced in the world, the history of each area vis a vis the evolving culture, and the science in producing the perfect cup of tea.

The book design itself is enormously pleasing, from graphics and photos that are more than illustrative, giving you a sense of the details involved.

This was a fun read and congratulations to the authors for a grand achievement.

And, as a bonus, there are a variety of recipes that are eminently intriguing.

Life changing Book

This is an incredible book. If you take the time to read it carefully, meditate upon the precepts of true holiness, it will begin to change your thinking and spiritual journey. Holiness is not a popular topic these days, but the the church is called out to be holy in practice and this book gives a great foundation to better understand the pursuit of holiness in daily life. I have read this book more than once, and have started studying it again recently. I also recommend the study guide as a supplement to use as you read through it, looking up the scriptures, very helpful.

A friend gave me this book many years ago. I read it every year. It never gets old. It is life-changing, convicting and inspiring - A must have for the Christian that takes their walk with Christ seriously. A great gift for someone growing in Christ or someone that truly wants to know what Holy living really entails. I have to say it is one of my favorites.

THE END OF AIR SUPERIORITY?

Robert F. Dorr warns America that its domination of the air is in peril because the United States Air Force is running out of fighter aircraft. “Legacy fighters” are the F-15 Eagle and F-16 Falcon—and those airframes are wearing out. No more “obsolete” F-15 or F-16 are being authorized by Congress. The two aircraft that were to replace the F-15 and F-16 were the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II. The Raptor program was gutted—Dorr gives a minimum number of F-22 airframes required for an effective Air Force that is far above the 187 currently authorized—381 to equip ten Air Expeditionary Forces. He quotes others who say that at least 600 F-22 Raptors are needed. The F-22 production lines are shut down. As for the F-35 program—Dorr pronounces it a failure. The author carefully explains his position.

Robert F. Dorr offers several solutions—including one on where to get the money to modernize the Air Force. One solution to the fighter shortage: put F/A-18F Super Hornets in the Air National Guard. Another is scrapping the B-2 program entirely.

“Air Power Abandoned” credits one person with destroying the United States Air Force: Robert Gates, Secretary of Defense. Gates took office 18 December 2006, but dismantling the Air Force began in 1991 with the “end” of the Cold War. Slashed were the new long-range bomber, a new tanker aircraft, a combat rescue helicopters—and the F-22 Raptor program (except for those aircraft already constructed). This was accomplished while fighting two major counter-insurgencies—Iraq and Afghanistan—plus the other dozen or so low-intensity conflicts world-wide that usually stay off the front page of your newspaper.

I recommend this book because the issues raised are important. The air-to-air refueling tanker KC-135 made the B-52 bomber an intercontinental weapon, but those old airplanes were designed at the end of the Forties and first flew during the early Fifties. The “replacement” DC-10 tankers are wearing out because of their dual-purpose cargo and tanker roles, which keeps these planes in constant use. The need for a tanker is key to the Seversky-style Air Force that Dorr endorses: an Air Force with primary bases in CONUS and no vulnerable over-seas bases. Door recommends the Airbus A330-200 tanker, a proven and reliable platform already in use by six air forces.

Today's Department of Defense focuses on the threat from international terrorism and from Anthropogenic Climate Change—ignoring incidents such as Russian bombers off the coast of California. Climate Change is where the money is today. Drones are the wave of the future—but not quite ready for prime time due to control lag and lack of situational awareness. Even drones need tanker aircraft to reach their targets—or else vulnerable forward air fields.

Mandatory Reading for AF personnel

Robert F. Dorr's AIR POWER ABANDONDED is one of the most daring books addressing the military as I've seen in recent times. He addresses the fact that no one seems to want to talk about . . . we are not perfect. This is a well researched, factual account of the rise and fall of a specific weapons system. While he does stray into other programs, it's to build the foundation for the underlying problem in weapons acquisition. Like any serious study, the book doesn't read like a novel; it's based on facts. But it does expose the serious problems that our Air Force faces with its aging weapons systems and the dangers facing us if we don't address them. This should be mandatory reading for discussion at the Air Force service schools (SOS, ACSC, Air War College). Well done Mr. Dorr!

Defeat Without Air Power

Before typing a review I check those that have already been posted so I don’t simply parrot what has already been written. In the case of Robert Dorr’s Air Power Abandoned: Robert Gates, the F-22 Raptor and the Betrayal of America's Air Force (Kindle Edition) I was somewhat surprised to see the book criticized for some of the very things I thought strengthened his argument. Dorr’s treatment of Gates, for example, is not drawn along familiar political lines because the Secretary worked for both Republican and Democratic administrations. This leaves Gates as Dorr describes him, someone with little or no interest in Air Power. This in itself is not a sin—unless he is the guy in charge, which Gates was.

As Dorr emphasizes so forcibly, every time we allow our ability to employ Air Power to weaken, we invite catastrophe. Seversky’s line of reasoning in Victory Through Air Power, Dorr points out, that positioning B-19s in Alaska within range of the Japanese Empire would have been a powerful deterrent that could well have thwarted the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

The present political climate reflects many of the issues covered in Air Power Abandoned, the bickering and haggling between services at the Pentagon where there are obviously too many generals and admirals, and money seems to be the only concern. Missing from the money equation is that large defense contracts, properly executed, tend to generate thousands of jobs—and millions in taxes.

Dorr’s concerns are pretty much limited to the Raptor and its alternatives, but his message is clear: a weak Air Force invites disaster.

Trevor Roberts, Jr. is a Senior Technical Marketing Manager for VMware. Trevor

has the CCIE Data Center certification, and he is a VMware Certified Advanced Professional

in the Data Center Design and Administration concentrations. In his spare time,

Trevor shares his insights on data center technologies at http://www.VMTrooper.

com, via the vBrownBag Professional OpenStack and Professional VMware podcasts,

and on Twitter (@VMTrooper). His contributions to the IT community have garnered

recognition by his designation as a VMware vExpert, Cisco Data Center Champion, and

Josh Atwell is a Cloud Architect for SolidFire, focusing on VMware and automation

solutions. Over the past 10+ years, he has worked very hard to allow little pieces of code

to do his work for him through various automation tools. Josh is a father of two boys with

wife Stephanie, and a daughter is on the way in early 2015. Based in the Raleigh, North

Carolina, area, he enjoys time with his family, golf, audiobooks, and trying new bourbons.

Josh has been highly active in the virtualization community, where he’s been a leader of

technology-based user groups such as CIPTUG, VMUG, and UCS Users Group. Josh

has worked with others on preparing for their professional development pursuits through

Egle Sigler (@eglute, anystacker.com) is currently a Principal Architect at Rackspace. She

started her career as a software developer, and still has a soft spot for all the people that

write, test, and deploy code, because she had a chance to do all of those tasks. Egle dreams

about a day when writing, testing, and deploying code will be a seamless and easy process,

bug and frustration free for all. Egle believes that knowledge should be shared, and tries to

do so by writing this book, giving talks and workshops at conferences, and blogging.

 

Yvo van Doorn has more than a decade of system administration experience. The first

part of his career, he manually built out and configured bare-metal servers. At Classmates,

Yvo became a champion of configuration management and virtualization. Before joining

Chef, he learned firsthand the power of VMware’s products when he moved a small Seattle

technology company’s complete production stack over to its virtualization platform. He’s

a strong believer in the culture change that comes with DevOps. When he isn’t busy

spreading the gospel of Chef, he’s probably enjoying a hoppy IPA, exploring the great

outdoors, or celebrating his Dutch heritage while eating a wheel of gouda and watching

Oranje lose the World Cup. Yvo lives with his wife and black lab in Seattle, Washington.

I didn't find this useful, it just gave some info about the various DevOps tools out there (Chef, Puppet, Ansible) and I found this info pretty generic. I was hoping for more information tailored to VMware admins.

About the Author

KOICHI TOHEI was born in January 1920 and graduated in 1942 from the economic department of Keio University. At the age of 17, he began the study of Misogi and Zen. At the age of 19, he started to study Aikido. At the age of 25, he studied mind and body unification with Tempu Nakamura. He had spread the principles of Ki and Aikido in the USA and Europe beginning in 1953. In 1971 he founded the KI NO KENKYUKAI. The KI NO KENKYUKAI is a foundation that was created to spread the principles involved in becoming one with the universe and how to app1 these principles to the execution of Kiatsu and to one's daily life.

An Inspiring Book

I like this book a lot. For me, it symbolizes a way to increase my own vitality, while also increasing the health of other people at the same time. I look forward to putting what it describes into practice. Although I am not far advanced in this at all, I have seen people who, through their hard work, have really latched onto something real and quite useful for other people. I hope to count myself among them. Buy the book if you have an interest in that direction and are willing to learn about things from another angle!

It's a VERY good book about the therapeutic power of ki

I've found this book easy to follow, which is not a common thing when talking about something not all have experienced before. A lots of illness may be cured following this book, but, mainly, you can live a better life using your own ki not only for yourself. The book explains well how to expand your ki and cure diseases without remaing without YOUR own ki, proposing a series of test (as usual in Tohei's books). I suggest all people interested in helping suffering people to buy this book and read it carefully as it's really good.

A very good book as a reference on Kiatsu

I wish it comes with a DVD, but you can find the video onlne on Youtube. This is a complete book written in a way which any serious student can follow. However, it takes practice to master the art of Kiatsu.
