The results of their work, supplemented by additional research in records not readily available during the war, are presented in this series. The general plan provides for subseries dealing with the War Department, the Army Air, Ground, and Service Forces, the technical services, and the theaters of operations. This division conforms to the organization of the Army during World War II and, though involving some overlapping in subject matter, has the advantage of presenting a systematic account of developments in each major field of responsibility as well as the points of view of the particular commands. The plan also includes volumes on such topics as statistics, order of battle, military training, the Women's Army Corps, and other subjects that transcend the limits of studies focused on an agency or command. The whole project is oriented toward an eventual summary and synthesis. No claim is made that it will constitute a final history. Many years will pass before the record of the war can be fully analyzed and appraised. This, the first volume on the Office of the Chief of Staff in World War II, highlights a significant and unprecedented preparation for war. It covers a period when longheaded military leadership and direction were needed before the people had been aroused to expression of their will, a people not yet aware of the dangers that lay ahead. More specifically, it tells of the contributions to national security that were made during the prewar period by the Chief of Staff and his immediate assistants. It is a history of military famine followed by plenty. It is a history of mistakes made as well as successes accomplished and of vision, foresight, forbearance, and selflessness. It is a history of deepening confidence, shared by the President, the Congress, and the people, in the integrity and ability of a leader who, although he did not aspire to greatness, was all the greater by reason thereof. During the period here depicted the Chief of Staff built so well and so strongly that the tragedy of Pearl Harbor did not shake the confidence of the nation. Mark Skinner Watson, the author of this volume, was an artillery officer in World War I, a war correspondent during the recent conflict, and a student of military affairs for many years. His dispatches to the Baltimore Sun won the Pulitzer Prize for International Correspondence in 1945.

Highly Recommended for Supernatural Fans

As a long-time fan of the show, I've read a number of the Supernatural novels by various authors and was largely disappointed. None seemed to add any critical - or even interesting - dimension to the series, and some were horrendous reads.

"The Mythology of Supernatural" is different. First off, it's non-fiction. Nathan Robert Brown is a bona-fide mythologist who combines his knowledge of the Supernatural series with a knowledge of Hebrew, Christian, Celtic and even Sumerian mythology, as well as folklore, to give fans a deeper understanding, hence deeper enjoyment, of the mythology involved in the shows. His writing is often scholarly, yet always presented in an enjoyable fashion. I look forward now to re-watching episodes with more information on the signs, symbols, and weapons used in the show.

Plus, if you read the book, you'll learn how to make your own holy water (you know, just in case...).

Highly Enjoyable

I bought this book thinking it would give me a deeper insight into the show Supernatural - and it did, just not in the way I anticipated. What the author does is take information used in the show then give you the background and history of it. As a lover of all things relating to traditional and angelic mythology and religious background I highly enjoyed the knowledge presented in this book. Though it's more a reference of background and history than it is Supernatural - the book is peppered with humorous quotes from the television show. Overall, I found this a highly enjoyable read.

I love it! Learned so much!

I got this expecting to read about the mythology in Supernatural. I was thinking it was a book about the myths and such that Sam and Dean researched. In this, I was a bit disappointed when I started it. But as I read it, I began to enjoy it so much. It's about the myths and legends of the real world that aspects of Supernatural were based on. Things such as the weapon Ruby's knife was based on, real demonic possession, myths/legends/stories of different religions, and my favorite, the legends/myths of Lilith. It's more research of our world as opposed to research in Sam and Dean's world. I learned SO much about our myths/legends/history.

Vamparody of dorkness

Anyone who enjoyed the tale of teenager Nigel Mullett, wimpiest and least scary vampire in history (or at least, in Stockfield) in Tim Collins' "Notes from a Totally Lame Vampire: Because the Undead Have Feelings Too!", will undoubtedly welcome the appearance of this sequel, "Prince of Dorkness: More Notes from a Totally Lame Vampire". Unlike many a sequel, this one is actually better than its predecessor, with funnier episodes and wittier writing, whilst having an absolute whale of a time poking fun a The Twilight Saga. Nigel's tale seems to give every impression of having run its course with this second book but fans of the genre need not despair, as more of the same is now available in in Tim Collins' latest effort, "Adventures of a Wimpy Werewolf: Hairy But Not Scary". Oh well...

This book is hilarious and really cool! Nigel is struggling with the decision of turning Chloe into another vampire. But when she becomes obsessed they decide to call it quits. They are brought together again when something truly surprising happens. I love this book and I'm sure any one who loves Tim Collins will too.
