The Meanest Man in Texas, by Don Umphrey

The amazing and miraculous true story of Clyde Thompson. He killed two men when he was 17 years old. The year was 1928 and the place was rural west Texas. He was nearly lynched while awaiting trial. Found guilty, he was then was sent to death row.

Thompson’s killing streak didn’t stop there. Nor did his desire to escape from prison. Prison officials finally gave him The Meanest Man in Texas moniker, and the prison chaplain said he was a man without a soul. Locked into a solitary confinement cell made especially for him from the old prison morgue, Thompson was a man without hope. It was then that he reached out for help and his life started to change.

The author is a professor emeritus at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas.

Important and inspirational chronicle of mid-20th century Texas prison life and one man's personal transformation behind bars
By Ranger
The Meanest Man in Texas is the true life story of Clyde Thompson, a Texas murderer turned preacher and his experiences as a "guest" of the Texas Department of Corrections from 1928-1955. As such it is probably one of the most detailed chronicles of prison life ever written, especially during the period in which Thompson was incarcerated and where he earned his nickname, "the meanest man in Texas." This book was loosely based on Thompson's own spiritual testimony entitled "The Life of Clyde Thompson -- Ex-83" which was originally published to promote his later prison ministry. But the author here, Don Umphrey, is a journalist and historian and this book has more of a journalistic feel to it. It is very well written and researched and impossible to put down once you start reading. Apparently Umphrey's book was originally published as an "inspirational" work by Thomas Nelson Christian Publishers back in 1984 which is curious as it has a historical depth and realism usually lacking in such books. It would never pass muster with the pearl-clutching politically-correct "school marm" types the Christian publishing world caters to these days. But Clyde's story and the history of the TDC both deserve to be retold so Quarry Press performed a genuine act of public service by re-publishing this in 2001. Anyone interested in prison reform, poverty reduction, social work, prison ministry, Christian testimony, Texas history or in simply reading a compelling and unique story about the human condition should read The Meanest Man in Texas. It's the best book I have read all year and it is highly, highly recommended.

Living in the Morgue
By Amazon Customer
Clyde Thompson literally lived in solitary confinement in the prison morgue for a number of years because he WAS that mean and that dangerous! Prison officials didn't know what else to do with him. He ate with his hands because prison officials were too scared to give him a fork. But one of the guards did give him a Bible, and with that, God turned his life around, and unbelievably, orchastrated his release from prison, his finding a true love, and his spending the remainder of his days in service to God. Think God can't use you? Read Clyde's story. It may change your mind. Don does a great job telling this remarkable story.

Excellent non-fiction about personal redemption
By robert mccafferty
This book is not fiction and thus does not have the whiz bang plot moments we often expect. But it is a true story of someone who was not a very good guy and decided to change his life. Decided to change who he was. He did it in about the worst of circumstances, a place where many claim to have dramatic changes that last only until their next temptation to do evil. He is not a highly educated buy, not a rich guy. He just knew he needed to change himself and he did. With little other incentive than it was the right thing to do.
